2021 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I mean, OSU has always had a “rivalry” with the SEC. I’m sure you know this, but OSU fans generally don’t like the SEC. so no, I don’t like that now half the relevant teams will be SEC. Why would I be sad the B1G didn’t add two great programs (well, Texas, eh…) to make the conference much harder for OSU, though? Your attachment to this jealousy thing is kind of strange.

Again, if the sport wants to make all but 1-2 conf irrelevant, cool. It’ll be like AFC/NFC or something. But the fact I have to watch the tradition slowly change over 20 years is going go be annoying. I understand why they can’t just rip the band aid off, doesn’t mean I have to like it.

That’s my guess is eventually it’s two conferences.

Due respect, I have no idea what your complaint is.

Do you enjoy the playoff more because OU represented the Big 12 in the playoff, instead of the SEC?

Its still Oklahoma...

Precisely. Take the preseason top 25 the NCAA just released:

If you stick Oklahoma and Texas in the SEC, in these rankings the SEC would have:
  • Three of the top four teams in the country
  • Five of the top 11
  • 8 in the top 20
In a 12 team playoff, you're likely guaranteed at least three teams in the playoffs and potentially could wind up with 5. There would likely be years where a four loss SEC team got in over a two loss team from another conference based solely on the strength of the conference.

Ultimately, I think the more likely scenario is a dramatic re-organization within the NCAA as a whole. With the way media rights and now NIL has evolved, the way the NCAA has done business up to this point is irrelevant and unless they are proactive in conference re-alignment and changing the general rules for college athletics, they could watch the whole system crumble.

You say “precisely” like this is a thing I should look forward to, four loss SEC teams making it. Like, what? Haha.

I hear you on the last part though. Seems like dramatic reorganization is coming.

So B1G will snag a couple basketball schools. Seems hardly comparable. Not that I’m sure this matters to OSU fans, whose team has been on a different level than the conference for a while. Just basically means there is one great superconference and this new playoff will be half SEC.

Yes, SEC would be the football super conference and there's not a lot the Big 10 can do to counteract that unless they could somehow manage to convince Clemson and ND to join.

That's why for the Big 10 itself, they'd be wise to pursue becoming the basketball super conference. Let's say you are able to add Kansas, UNC, and Virginia. As a basketball conference you're head-and-shoulders above every other conference in the country.

Call me a traditionalist I guess.

And not looking forward to the scenario Bob mentioned coming to pass, quite frankly. But that’s just a hypothetical.

As an Oklahoma fan I was really hoping to go to the big 10, I fucking hate the SEC. However this has to be the death blow to the big 12. There is no way it can stay in business losing its 2 biggest schools.

The Big 12 was formed in 1994.

I don’t see your point.

But anyhow, again, not a fan of teams getting in with a bunch of losses because they play in a megaconference and had the “privilege” of losing to three or four SEC teams. I’m sure we’ll have that conversation when the time comes though.

My belief is that if the NCAA wants to actually continue, the conference structure as we know it will have to change.

Otherwise, I could absolutely see a 16 team SEC withdrawing themselves from the NCAA, negotiating their own television and media contracts, creating a pay structure for athletes, hosting their own playoffs, and so on. If half of your conference is in the top 20, at what point does it not make sense to play anyone outside of your conference?

You think a 4-loss SEC team gets into a 12-team playoff?

C'mon. I'm all for baseless projection, but this seems a little overboard, no?

I get people like to do the whole "ESPN loves the SEC bit," but this seems well over-the-top.

Well, ESPN doesn’t pick the teams, but you have to admit this is only going to inflate this near mythical presence the SEC has. “Good losses” and all. I could see it happening but it depends on the year. I personally don’t give a shit about ESPN, not sure why you brought them up in regards to me or if you were just speaking in generalities.

I don't think it's likely, but it's possible. If you play a total of eight conference games, half the teams in your conference are in the top 20, and 5 are in the top 12, you could figure out a number of scenarios where a 8-4 SEC winds up getting in especially if they pick up a good win out of conference.

You ever think that has to do with winning the vast majority of championships and producing the most NFL talent?

Speaking in generalities, but I can't think of a single reason to even care about what conference a team is from in a 12-team format.

B1G will have to take ND and raid some ACC school. Virginia, UNC, maybe BC.

ND will likely just join the ACC. UNC isn't ditching Duke and fuck BC (I'd gladly take the rest, just seems unlikely).

If there's a single super-conference, they will certainly get additional preference for playoff spots while the other conferences struggle to get a team in (especially in the current format).

I totally see the motivation for OU/UT and the SEC, but it's certainly not a positive step for the sport or the B1G. The Big 12 has 8 other teams that will now have to scramble for a spot in the remaining "Power" conferences or be left to rot. I guess one could argue it's part of the sports inevitable shift away from being a regional sport to being the same as every major sports league, but doesn't mean people have to enjoy it.

The problem with the SEC consolidating more power is that it makes it worse to follow everywhere else in the country. Why are you acting like it's a surprise that anyone would question this move?

Have never, ever said the SEC was anything but the best conference, even if propped up a bit by Alabama’s absurd accomplishments. I don’t have a ton of interest in going back and forth with you on this further, it always has an abrasive feel no matter how hard you try not to. You make some good points for sure, and I see some positives. But I’m with Akronite on this one. I reserve the right to change my mind. :chuckle:
