Are you taking that gamble?

I'm fairly certain Berry isn't.

You trade serious premium assets for him, and you think his agent is just going to say "yeah, no worries. We don't need a new deal"?

Relative to the language used in his trade request, it seems like a situation where a team might be able to do a lot of more surface level things to assuage him. Wax poetic in public, guaruntee a larger portion of his money, tack on some bonuses or a year.

He’s on such a friendly deal, relative to his talent and production. It is certainly an opportunity for a team to get creative and acquire him.

I just don’t get it from Miami’s perspective though. They are a team trying to make the playoffs and they could have put out this fire relatively easily. If they were willing to trade him prior to this, seems somewhat silly they would have let the relationship sour at all and potentially decrease his value. If they wanted to keep him, just guarantee some more money and move on. Strange one on the surface.

I don't get why folks want to trade for dudes already on big money deals...especially when the Browns have plenty of talent and depth at those positions. The Browns have to pay Baker, Ward, Chubb and have Teller, Njoku and Harrison waiting. The Browns have Ward, Newsome, Greedy and Hill as CBs. Howard is a top CB, but the Browns have very good talent there. When you add in the cost to get him, and the cost to give him a new deal, it's just not worth it. At all.

Realistically, people will always want us to chase the big names. But I agree with you. This team isn't in a position to be acquiring expensive veterans. We've got some bills coming due soon and we need to keep our cap clean for them.

From PFN:

For the team acquiring Howard, the contract on the surface is extremely friendly. Howard is due to earn $12.1 million in salary in 2021, $12.4 million in 2022, $11.4 million in 2023, and $11.7 million in 2024. There is another $500,000 per-game roster bonus each year, but the contract is very affordable for one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

I think he is a more unique case. Where he isn’t even necessarily high priced, relative to his age, production and future value of his deal.

Obviously, you have to guaruntee a larger portion of that money and build a good relationship with him but he’s strangely one of the good vets who is actually somewhat of a value, if all it takes is more guarunteed money and some bonuses that are mutual incentives for the player and team.

You're not including the cost to acquire him...the additional cost to keep Ward...or what that $13M in new money spent on Howard means for Baker, Chubb, Ward, Teller, Njoku and/or Harrison...

I don’t think we’re in a position to give up first or second round picks right now. With all the guys coming due for extensions, we need those picks to keep the cupboard restocked with young talent on cheap deals.

I think you should only give up a future first if you’re plugging a major hole in a roster that otherwise has championship ambitions, but this is a team that doesn’t have any major weaknesses on paper.

Which is why you talk to his agent before making the deal.

Even if we were willing & able to trade for Howard, Miami is not going to trade arguably their best player to an AFC playoff & Super Bowl contender when the Dolphins have those same ambitions themselves.

I agree. Teller and Njoku with other teams.

I planned on getting into this with an article I'm working on for RBF, but the Teller situation has a few avenues which could play out.

Let's say former 5th rounder Nick Harris looks great this year. Wouldn't the Browns be better off cutting 31 year old JC Tretter's 7.9 million salary and keeping Teller for his athletic prime? At that point, the lines oldest starting player is Bitonio at age 30.

If nobody steps up at center and they have to keep JC, then the conversation about replacements begins. Maybe Hudson is ready for a starting gig or Forbes surprises... but it's too early to tell right now.

I very much assume Harris will be the starting center in 2022.

I don’t know that means that we want to pay Teller what another team might pay.

I might be in the minority here but with Harris's VERY limited time, I was not entirely impressed. I know he was out of position but even so the way he got bull rushed and leaked pressure up the middle wasn't great. How does a guy fix that? Strength training? Maybe better technique?

I just get the feeling he'll always only ~barely~ contain bull rushes and so his pass blocking might be unreliable.

That's the difference between a right guard and a center, IMO. The center *can* be an absolute road grader who leads the rush attack like Alex Mack.

However, in the ZBO that's the exception not the rule. In the zone blocking scheme, the ability to move to the second level is more important. They selected Harris despite his lack of ideal bulk because he is a great blocker on the move.

In pass blocking, Harris showed he struggles as a guard. He would have a different assignment as the center, sealing and helping double team. He does need to work on bull rushes from a zero tech, which is how he gave up a block on his lone start last season.
