Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We were going to spend the entire MLE on a backup PG. Now we can use it on other players. They badly needed shooting before shipping out Prince, so I hope they land Forbes even if he costs the entire MLE.

Forbes is a terrible fit for the team. Yes he can shoot lights out. But he's 6-2. Where do you play him? We got Sexton, Garland, Rubio eating up minutes and Okoro will see time at SG. He can't play SF.

He would be an instant upgrade to Garland as a shooter lol

I don't think another 6'2 guard is going to slide into the rotation easily.

The off-season is only three days old, but the best chance the team has of making significant improvement will come from within. The core of the team is predominantly under 24 with less than four years of NBA experience. Those guys have been in Cleveland working out and improving all summer.

After Exum had his annual season-ending injury, our bench took a noticeable dive. We didn't have an NBA caliber backup PG on the roster and it showed with that second unit. Getting one was an absolute priority.

Oh, I agree... but Rubio just filled that spot.

This team was last in the NBA in made 3s last year and second to last in opponents 3 point % defensively. Nothing is changing if that doesn't change. If Okoro has to play more minutes at SF than we might like so we can have better spacing, then that's what has to happen.

I think Forbes or Caruso might have to be options because we saw in 2019/2020 that if we don't have enough shooters then teams just play zone against us. That caused us to take time to teach players how to break a zone and get good enough that teams stop doing it which is just wasted time for development since teams only use it against terrible teams.

If we can't get good shooting wings the alternative is to just find them in other spots and make due. We may just have to sit Rubio at times so that we can put another shooter on the floor, that may hurt developing some players but it might be better for development than playing against zone defenses for long stretches of the season.

If we go after a shooter like Markkanen maybe we can play him at backup center and he provides spacing to keep Mobley at PF. Nance and Love can't stay healthy playing any sort of decent minutes at center. I don't know if it's worth playing Wade at center.

Guys like Georges Niang or Doug McDermott make more sense then Forbes or Caruso. Niang might be the best FA to target depending on how his market shapes up. Played 16 MPG for Jazz had 4 3 Point Attempts per game and shot at 42.5%. He has the perfect skill set at least offensively to fit with what we currently have on the roster.

There are 96 minutes available at the positions Forbes and Caruso can play. Let's say 144, for the sake of being generous.

The Cavaliers have Sexton, Garland and Okoro playing at least 30 minutes each. Rubio is probably gonna play 20 mpg. Since adding the extra 48 minutes at SF, we gotta add Cedi (at least 10?), Windler (5?), Nance (5mpg at SF?). Even using conservative numbers, that's 130 of 144 minutes spoken for. With *no one* else playing minutes, that leaves 14 for Forbes or Caruso. You think they'll come to Cleveland for *maybe* 14 mpg?

Right and this all comes back to timing of the Rubio deal and opportunity cost by doing it before the draft. Where are we going to get shooters from? How are we going to balance out this roster?

We gave up Prince who shot 37% from 3 in his career at a position that could have help to balance the roster out since he could play SF. We might be stuck seeing zone defenses for the next year unless we have guys currently on the team take a leap with their 3pt shooting.

I've said this Rubio deal to me is something you do at the end of free agency and the draft if we strike out. To start off everything with it just limits how we could approach alot of things. It's not Rubio himself but the transaction and the timing.

I looked at some Niang highlights and I think you're right. I wouldn't go after McDermott because I think the league shifted to where McDermott could play PF and it put him in better position than when he was playing SF. I think McDermott is a PF now even though he played SF/PF in the past. We just don't need another PF even if he can shoot really well.

Yall really think Niang is more of a SF than Doug McBuckets??? I don't see that, at all.

I think Niang is the best option because despite being a better player his market won't be as high as McDermott. Neither will be even average defenders. Your paying for a shooter. And last couple seasons in Utah Niang has shot the ball at an excellent rate.

But he's not a SF...

I like Rubio a lot. But I’m not gonna pretend like he’s on his fourth team in as many years for no reason.
