2021 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Schools with the strongest boosters will essentially be able to buy talent to a much greater degree than they could before.

Nah, they just will get a return on their investment now.

Can I ask: why is it such a big deal to you? Why do you get more enjoyment out of it if you know the players are poor?

That comment that tell me this particular discussion is a waste of time.

Schools with the strongest boosters will essentially be able to buy talent to a much greater degree than they could before. That will be true at pretty much every level. It'll become very pronounced when you get to the top level programs with very wealthy boosters.

Of course, there was always some of that before. But nothing like what it will become when it can be done openly.

Lol's aside, how much that matters to each fan is a matter of personal preference.

Pretty sure you’re just describing capitalism, at best you’re describing the college football landscape before NIL.

There will be ample schools with super rich mega boosters who still suck, and the programs build the best culture and infrastructure will dominate recruiting.

Same as it ever was, though almost certainly gives smaller schools a chance to build a more competitive infrastructure if their boosters have to start regulating NIL benefits through the NCAA.

Under the old system, players got suspended for selling their own stuff while a coach could violate ncaa rules to the point where his school got sanctions, visit hookers, and still get a 7 figure salary.

I loved the idea of amateurism but I can’t defend the old system, ethically.

NIL happened, there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle and I’ve always supported paying the players given the salaries of coaches, athletic directors, etc.

The question is whether we can maintain some semblance of the sport as it is, and the answer appears to be no. All emphasis is on the biggest teams, biggest payouts, and getting playoff spots. It’s worth it to end the “amateur” scam, but I can see myself caring less about the sport on the whole if it just becomes the NFL minor league. If I went to a non-P5 school I’d be pissed because the SEC move is probably going to limit the amount of representation that would’ve been afforded by the 12 team expansion.

But what impact does it truly have? I mean this honestly? What is the impact that being the NFL minor league truly having?

Are you upset that bowl games are ending? Because honestly? Not much I'd changing at all. We will probably see 2 Super Conferences rather than the Power 5, but that still will not change much. They still have to schedule OOC games. There will always be a plethora of bowl games that aren't connected to the playoffs.

I guess I truly don't see what the issue is here. How is this bad for college sports?

It'll be as competitive as would MLB without a draft, and without exclusive rights to drafted players.

I'll still watch my own school when I can, but the "National Championship" will just be less relevant/important/interesting to me.

The shift creates the potential for the top programs to essentially break off and create a super league type system in the future. This will mean that the sport's regional roots will lose relevance and a lot of programs will end up left behind to possibly die. From my perspective, I'd much prefer for the game to shift toward parity and getting representation from across the conferences into the expanded playoff, but the SEC and ESPN have engineered a different path. I guess it just feels like the sport continues to double down on the rich getting richer, while I want more chaos & underdog stories.

Bowl games have already lost a lot of their mystique as the game has evolved to center the national championship and now the playoff. I don't really care much about bowl games unless it's a really cool matchup or the Buckeyes are in it, but more and more nails are going into that coffin and with it we'll lose a bit of what makes college football special. The more it becomes like a pro league (and again, I support letting the players get their bag), the less interesting it becomes for fans that aren't already invested in one of the Blue Bloods.

For the record, NIL is certainly a factor in all this but I'm just annoyed by OU/UT. OU will probably continue to snag playoff spots but lose every time and hopefully Texas continues to eat ass, fuck em both.
