Cap people....how does a buyout work? Does whatever he gives up come off our cap? Or, or are we still on the hook for the whole bill?

If it does come off, is it spread out, or can we lump the whole give back into next year to try and open up some space?

I mean, if we're doing of all time, he's maybe top 10, but I think my top 5 would be
1. Rick Fox
2. Steven Adams
3. Dwyane Wade
4. JJ Reddick
5. Baron Davis
My mom liked Rick Fox. Her favorite was Eddie Johnson, though.

My next four after Love would be Michael Smith (the Mormon dude who played for the Celtics in the late 80s/early 90s and was a Clippers commentator for a long time alongside Ralph Lawler), Matt Maloney (Rockets pg from the Barkley years), Grant Hill, and then probably J.J. Redick.

Are we talking the respectable Eddie Johnson or Fast Eddie Johnson with the cocaine, jumping from balconies, and eventually dying in jail after like a hundred arrests. The latter played with us for a brief stint. I assumed mom liked the other one, but maybe she liked a challenge, and bad boys, but he was a really bad boy by the end.

Lol, the respectable one. He was admittedly a rather handsome and smooth dude in his day. He once made a comment in Sports Illustrated that professional athletes were essentially wh*res with their bodies, so I'm guessing he had no problem with the ladies:

So I see Wojo is reporting that Love and the Cavs are working towards a buyout and if happens he wants to sign with the Lakers (reunion with LBJ and Westbrook)

Grant Hill's kid played in the same soccer club with my kid....also the GM of the Diamondbacks, but that is a different story. I used to see Grant allot, lol

I wonder how much Love is gonna give up in a buyout. I'd hope for at least $9M.

If he takes less then does his cap number also go down? If not then I don’t care what he gets bought out at Gilbert has plenty of money.

Yes his cap number will go down the next 2 seasons if he takes a buyout. If he gives back $10 mil then his cap number will go down $5m this season and $5m next season.

With that said if he signs with the Lakers they can only offer him a minimum vet contract. In that case I wonder if Love would be willing to give back much on a buyout. There are other teams that can offer him part of their MLE. For instance the Suns could offer him half their MLE and they need a backup PF with Saric on the shelf this season. In that case I'd think he would give back more in a buyout... Just spitballin here.

I have a hard time imagining him giving up that much $. He has his ring. He’d probably prefer the JR “just stay home for a while” treatment.

Yes, he made the occasional stupid plays. But now matter how stupid the play is, it is just one play, and one bucket. But the other things he gave us his first two seasons here outweighed that. His defense was absolutely critical against GSW, and he gave it on every possession. Just check his advanced stats. If you want a comparison, think about Manny Ramirez. Obviously, J.R. is not as good as Manny, but Manny also committed the occasional hard-scratching, boneheaded play. But you didn't bench him because of what else he gave you. The same was true of J.R. in his first two seasons.

Different story after 2016 in my opinion. Both his offense and his defense dropped off significantly, which meant the occasional boneheaded play hurt worse. I actually think his dropoff was part of what gave us pretty much no chance against GSW. LBJ couldn't help out on backcourt defense as much after GSW got Durant, and with the falloff in J.R.'s defense, their backcourt could torch us at will.
I believe JR was struggling with family related issues, injuries, and decline in performance that occurs with age in the seasons after the championship.

His personality (and play sometimes) was all over the place but most fans embraced it. It's too bad that he had probably harshest and fastest decline out of anyone from the championship team.
