2021 Game #2 | #3 Ohio State vs. #12 Oregon | September 11th, 2021 @ 12 PM EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well that was one of the easier losses to watch IMO. We were getting outplayed, especially in the trenches, and the comeback couldn't fully materialize. For a second there it looked like we had a classic on our hands, but a real whimper to go out on. It wasn't like some of our past losses where I wanted to stop watching altogether. And I'll definitely take it over a conference loss or an SEC/Clemson loss. It's Oregon, who was frankly "due" a win against us (now we're 9-1, we suck!). And as they are a playoff contender, that means our season isn't over. We will drop further than Clemson's TD-less going, which makes sense given the reputation of our opponent, but our window is still open.

That said, I think our aspirations for a national title are on life support at best right now. The defense is as bad as advertised last week. No pressure on the QB and spending way too much time on the field. Coombs clearly doesn't have answers and I pin this loss on the coaching moreso than the talent we have.

Stroud had a really good game statistically, but it started to come apart toward the end when they needed to force the issue. Before the season, although a win was absolutely expected in this game, we all could've foreseen some struggles. Oregon is a good team and this QB is new, so expecting him to cover for the failings of the defense is asking a lot. We will see how they respond. It's cliche to invoke our 2014 loss to VT, and this doesn't look like a defense that can take us all the way, but it really is just one loss.

I think people are overestimating the field to think we are a "bad" team (maybe I'll eat those words). Bama is the only team that looks like a juggernaut. Stroud will continue to develop. If he fails to and it's a mediocre season, we have the recruiting to bounce back.

On to Tulsa!

Yea Stroud.

I hate pinning anything on him because his stats say he was good and he made some good throws and it's his 2nd start.

But we can't just look at it in a vacuum. He has, by far, the best group of WRs in the country to throw too and he missed multiple TDs today. his deep ball is subpar, and that's a problem when we have two guys consistently getting open deep.

We score 45 with Fields today.

we are really bad this year. Thats a problem

I'd say "Ryan Day isn't the best coach in Ohio" is significantly more laughable than daring to compare Day to Dabo.

I've also never been huge on Dabo. I think he's overrated and was propped up by Deshaun and Lawrence while playing in a bad conference. If someone wanted to argue that not winning in both Lawrence's sophomore and junior campaigns is an indictment instead of a positive, I wouldn't disagree. Swap the two coaches and I think OSU does worse.

So it's an indictment a guy didn't win three straight National Titles? Good lord. No matter what conference they were in they still had to go through the playoffs to win the National Title. Big 10 has been a pretty shit conference as of late, so I'm not sure that point holds any weight at all.

What coach isn't propped up by high level players? By that line of logic, Saban shouldn't be considered the best coach since he's always playing with the best talent, right?

We'll see.

There's a chance this is a 7 win team.

Minnesota won by 5, at home, against a truly, truly awful Miami of Ohio team. Like, a team that legit might not win a single game.

So OSU might end up having a 6-7 win season. The defense is pretty terrible.

Defense is terrible, but I still think this offense will grow enough that they will win some games for us. I don’t think there’s a team left on the schedule as talented as Oregon. Get right in the next couple of weeks and should be 5-1 heading into Bloomington

Just got back from the game, that was embarrassing. Can't believe we got bullied by Oregon like that.

Defense is even worse than it was last year, which is truly unbelievable.

Also, the atmosphere absolutely sucked. It was completely dead in there until the 4th Quarter when we were trying to get Oregon's offense off the field. Worst atmosphere I've ever experienced in The Shoe, and I've seen a fair share of blowouts against MAC schools. These noon kickoffs are fucking bullshit. Thank God we're getting an extra buck from FOX for it, though.

if we have a 6-7 win season with the amount of talent on offense we have, I'd be looking at getting rid of everyone on the defensive coaching side not named Larry Johnson.

Stroud has shown me more in this game to get excited about than last week. Sure, he made some freshman mistakes but I thought his ball placement was much, much better this week. He was able to zip it into some tight areas.

strouds pretty bad. But young.

We need to bring Marcus Freeman home as DC.

Let's wait a bit. I saw someone else say this on twitter then went and checked and wouldn't you know it they're losing at home to Toledo.

Put some money on that ya clown

I mean...Toledo has 16 points and 150 yards midway through the 3rd. As an OSU fan I'd take that from our defense every game from here on out...

But, yeah. Freeman or Dantonio for DC next year. Coombs you can keep on staff for his recruiting if you want, I don't care either way though. But this experiment with him at DC is over.

This is an extremely rational take. History suggests Ohio State will still have an 11-1 season, no worse than 10-2. But we’ve become so spoiled as a fanbase that losing one regular season game for the first time in almost 3 years has everyone spewing scorching hot takes. Urban lost some regular season games here much worse than this one. He usually had his teams ready to answer afterward though. Let’s see what Day does. The loss fucking sucks don’t get me wrong but Oregon had just about everything go their way and still barely won. The next month is a bunch of cupcakes. Really? The only looming threat on the schedule is Penn State. Can still run the table, youngsters will only improve the more reps they get, and we’ll see what happens around the country. Every team had warts minus Alabama. Hopefully there’s a lot of chaos this year, and this loss doesn’t keep us out of the National title hunt.
