Cleveland Browns 2021 Regular Season: RIP

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The better team is the team that wins. That's what winning is.

But I agree that we beat ourselves. You can barely afford to make any significant mistakes against the Chiefs in KC, let alone 3 or 4.

I predicted we'd pull out a close game. Well, it was a close game. I was watching it as we finished our deck, so aside from the occasional streaming glitch and sun glare, I caught most of it. The Harrison thing was stupid. The Scottish Bed Shitting was stupid. The KC player made a good play on Chubb to get the fumble, Baker made one bad decision all game, and on that Schwartz drop, Thornhill made a pretty incredible recovery to get a hand on it.

The play that gets me is the whack-ass bomb to Hill. Go back and look at Mahomes throw that. Nobody else in the league can make that throw. Nobody. Take away that one play and we win.

I thought we shouldn't have played so soft on D in the 3rd, we should have used JOK more, but I understand the scheme's goals: prevent the big plays, quick strikes, which we did except for the freak Mahomes-Hill play. I don't know why we couldn't get DPJ more targets, or draw up a sweep for Schwartz. Hubbard looked shitty a couple times. Njoku was a beast. OL: still good. DL got to second level but couldn't tag Mahomes much. Newsome held up well. (Not a word about him means good things.) Our LBs and safeties are still a major concern re: depth of talent.

Lots of good and bad to take from this game. But the bottom line is that against a KC, you can't give the ball away, you can't spot them on the 50 or the 15, because not only will they kill you on those, they'll get a freak bomb to Hill, etc.,...and yet we almost overcame all that. This Browns team is for real. It's gonna be a good season.

And the deck looks good. Never built a deck before.

The better team doesn't always win. Sometimes luck is involved. It wasn't a glaring difference between the Browns being vastly "better" than Kansas City, but the fact that they had 2 TOs and still were driving for the win, speaks to it being the Browns beating themselves; not being beaten by Kansas City.

one big positive is that I trust Stefanski and his staff to really fix mistakes and to continue to improve on other areas of weakness as the season progresses....certainly a huge 180 from the opener last year. Browns are significantly ahead of last year and probably would have beat like 29-30 teams in the league yesterday the way they played

If you want to talk about someone with a track record of high end success who low key struggled in the clutch, look no further than Jack Conklin.

1st and 10 with 10 minutes to go up 2, Conklin gets beat like a drum by Jones for an immediate sack which more or less kills that drive and forces a punt (which was botched).

2nd and 5 with 6:15 to go down 4, Conklin again gets beat horribly by Jones which blows the play up immediately for a 2 yard loss. This was a big one IMO, because everyone else appears (haven't seen the All-22 yet) to have maintained their blocks perfectly.

If that's a regular Chubb gain (he had 14 carries for 85 yards coming into that play, so the odds are likely it would have gained a good amount), then maybe the Browns get a first down on that play or at worst have a third and short where they don't feel obligated to throw deep down the field.

I’m not sure on the run, but if it’s the cut back play, there was a lot more to that than just Conklin. There wasn’t even a hole to cut back to.

On the sack though, when we get A22, Baker’s first read is Hunt. It’s open, he doesn’t throw it. Gotta take that throw. Jones abused Conklin on the back side.

Yeah I agree, it's tough to know for sure without the A22.

I just know Conklin got beat across his face immediately which caused Jones to be in the backfield immediately. Chubb tried to cut back to the right, but that was into the waiting arms of two defenders.

My assumption is that the play was designed to go left and Conklin's missed block generally blew the whole thing up, but it's hard to say.

I'm not even sure I would call the Browns the better team on Sunday. I think the offensive play-calling was top notch and our players executed extremely well. But it wasn't easy. Baker made a lot of tight-rope throws into tight coverage. Receivers were generally catching the ball in traffic (DPJ first down reception as an example). We were executing on 3rd and 4th downs for the most part. I mean the play-calling was lights out (IMO), and that may not be the same story if we played KC again the next day.

Whereas with KC, a ton of their receptions were just wide open passes with a lot of separation. Did Kelce even attempt a contested catch? I can't remember Hill being covered in man hardly at all, and the one time I do was when Ward made that spectacular deflection. Obviously we don't want to run just man against him. I can see KC mostly replicating their offensive success a lot more frequently against our defense than us replicating our offensive success against their defense, at least in the passing game. We shut down their rushing and we had good success on the ground vs. them.

Not holding my breath on good news regarding Wills' injury and this will definitely be something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Here's the broadcast angle. I'm pretty sure Chubb is looking to run to the left behind Njoku, Hubbard and Bitonio's blocks. All three look like they've made good contact.

But right as Chubb is receiving the hand off, he sees Chris Jones, the backside DE, all the way in the hole he's supposed to be running through, having beat Conklin down the line badly. So he cuts back to the right... directly into the two unblocked linebackers for a loss.

I always tell myself I want Chubb at end of games, but in that specific play, I probably want Hunt because he isn’t going to attempt to cut.

I was VERY happy with Nick just going down though. No hero ball, such a team play.

Thanks for the feedback fellas!

Seems to me the only way to beat them is to possess the ball as long as possible, which the Browns were successful with in the first half and to bat some balls.

I actually feel better today than yesterday.

This team is going to be good. We fucked up and made mistakes yesterday against the best team in the league on the road.

It’ll be a fun year.

I actually feel better today than yesterday.

You're showing growth as a fan. Also it's not like we've been winning so much that we know how to handle having real expectations.

One thing that I did yesterday that I always do is when I'm watching other games I always take note of all the former Browns that are playing. I used to watch and feel like we let too many of these guys go but I didn't see a single former player yesterday that I wished we had back.
