Garland is the best player on the roster unless or until Mobley demonstrates otherwise. The fact that he averaged six assists when most of Sexton's buckets are unassisted, Sexton's usage is as high as it is, and no one else on the roster can hit a jump shot was a bit of a miracle. If he was on a team that was just average from 3 point range, he would've averaged 17 and 8 as a 20 year old.
meh Garland needs to make more shots to get any love from me at this point. Passes nice and sure better teammates would make his dime rate go up which is the hope this season but Is he the best player on the roster? not by a mile and I am almost cringing at the idea of that being the case smh.
You put Garland in a Jason Tatum frame and maybe, but that aint gonna happen.
I want to see Garland start taking and making tough shots not just open 3's because few defenders think he will shoot.
His shooting or lack there of is just as concerning as Sextons disinterest in giving it up to teammates afraid to shoot

Let me ask for those who don’t like Sexton. Realistically, what would you want for him to develop this season? I love Sexton and I like to see how he can improve in playing together as a teammate with more talent and how he involves Lauri and Mobley in the game.
He can go over picks to contest three point shots and stop leaking out before we've secured the defensive rebound. He can take the open three instead of waiting for the defender to recover so that he can drive on them. If Garland or Lauri is unguarded from three, and the paint is packed, the ball should come back to one of them. If someone else has the hot hand, he can feed them instead of having to be the hero.

The problem with Garland compared to Sexton is, when it's game 7 and you need a score, who do you go with? Garland doesn't seem to have that killer instinct, but Sexton can be nearly unstoppable at times. I wish Garland played more agressively, but he likes to slow it down all the time.

He lead the team in 3 point attempts and had the best 3 point % of any starter.

and when last season that he kicked it out did it ever result in anything besides a brick at the end of the shot clock or Garland dribbling into the trees himself looking for a rope to save him

yep and I bet almost all were not defended nearly as much as Sextons attempts. Garland almost never took anything besides an open 3 , his mid range game stinks his finishing stinks but yeah he can pass
and btw making that claim is pretty funny as an argument when he took so few attempts despite being afforded so many often wide open opportunities with Sexton being so heavily guarded on the perimeter started taking less after he destroyed the Nets .
If Garland just would have taken and made more consistently to the point defenses had to start expecting him to shoot, it would have made life a lot easier on Sexton getting some open looks besides having to eat up ball usage hunting shots.
For all the criticisms of Sexton not passing to unwilling shooters there is an argument to be made that garland was one of them and made the team worse by only looking to pass to a interior player for a contested paint bucket

I think Sexton as a PG is a lost cause, and I believe the organization agrees.

Bringing in Rubio, and even Pangos for emergencies, assures that Sexton can just focus on playing to his strengths without ever having to worry about playing PG again.

I think it's easier on the coaching staff and the front office to let Sexton be a SG because it leads to better play right now. I think they have given up because of job security more than team building. If we are winning I think it's fine to go down that path but in the times where the team is dealing with injuries and wins aren't coming, they should try to develop Sexton's PG skills.

I think ultimately if Sexton stays on the team that the more PG skills he can develop the more the more flexibility it allows for the roster and lineups. He doesn't need to get to the level of a starting PG, being on the level of a backup PG would help alot.

As usual, your assessment of Garland doesn’t line up with reality.

I’ll give you this, if anyone says he was an actual good player last year, they’re wrong. Nance, Allen, and Sexton were the only guys last year that contributed more to winning than losing, even if the margin was slight.

However, he has shown himself to be a pretty good shooter, and his finishing was much improved from his rookie year and decent for a guard.

People assume that any player can develop any skill and it's not always the case. This is Sexton's fourth season in the NBA. His speed is a double edged sword. It allows him to get by his defender but it makes it much more difficult for him to see the floor. He's going to miss open shooters when he plays like that.

you mean like getting to the line three times more often than Garland despite packed paint due to a lack of floor spacers? smh

Is the Sextons ability to use to his teammates more often is due to his vision or lack of floor spacer? Garland vision does not just rely on good shooters from behind the arc. Little dude is great at finding the open man in the paint or cutting to the paint. And while Garland makes it look easy, not all players have that touch.

This right here.

Sexton's passing will likely always be tied to his ability to bend the defense with his speed, first step, and shooting ability. Garland moves players with his dribble and threat of his shot.

Sexton should really only worry about passing to the open man from the coverage he demands and he will be fine. Works for other good or great scorers who are constantly doubled, but aren't pass you open guys.

Yeah something to this. You want Garland to be your floor raiser and Collin to be your ceiling raiser, killing teams in the clutch.
