(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Gosh was it nice to see the defense dominate today. Would have pitched a shutout if not for Stefanski losing his mind on 3rd/4th down play calls and a super weak PI call on JJ3.

Was at a bar so wasn't watching as closely as I would otherwise, but looking forward to watching a replay to see the looks we had on that side of the ball today.

D-Line stepped up today. Fields couldn't breathe..

The *only* shortcoming for this defense, and it's more of a credit to Fields in my mind, is that they didn't get a fumble or interception out of that 60 minute asswhooping.

That was the apparently the 9th fewest yards a team has given up to an offense in NFL history. There have been a ton of pathetic offenses and elite defense to play this game. As bad as the Bears are, and they are bad, you have to give the team and coaches credit. That's just a heck of a game plan that was executed exceptionally well.

I've definitely seen some people who were calling for Woods to be fired a week ago claiming some kind of victory.

They believe they were the catalyst for the defense being more aggressive.

Naw, it don't work like that. If anything, you pissed the defense off. Don't get within ten feet of Myles claiming haters on Twitter fixed the defense.

Getting ready for the defense to look shaky against the Chargers in a couple of weeks and everybody having a collective meltdown all over again.

Vikings actually have been a much better offense (not taking into consideration who they played). They've just given up a shit ton of points.

Woods did well today, his game plan completely confounded Fields and the Bears.

But this was a rookie making his first NFL start, let's not get too carried away. His overall body of work still sucks. if this is the beginning of a trend in the right direction, then I'd be ecstatic. He has to prove that he's actually competent before I'll believe it, though. He may have had fuck all to work with last year, but he's had talent and a real off-season this year and he's at one good game and 2 bad ones. I'm hoping it's just that he needs some time for the new personnel to gel.

I want Woods to succeed because if he does, we're probably playing for a superb owl. But he hasn't shown me enough good to take away all the bad that's on tape since his been on our staff.

Agreed.

I was reading a post on a Chicago Bears forum where someone broke down every Justin Fields play and was showing how many of the issues were on Fields not making it to his 2nd read and hesitating on throws to his guys. There were guys open on most plays.

But that's what you do if you're Woods, right? You generate pressure, cause confusion, and disguise your coverages. It feels like I've seen more of it this game than I have his entire time so far as DC. Blitzing 5 (instead of just rushing 4) sometimes makes a HUGE difference. I think our base soft zone scheme is fine and we saw it plenty yesterday, it just can't be the only thing we do.

Next week Kirk Cousins will take advantage of those opportunities. It's important that we temper expectations in terms of their total offensive output after yesterday's game - it'll be much better than it was for the Bears. They'll move the ball and get first downs. But I'd like to see a little aggression from time to time. The Bears did plenty PA rollouts and we shut it down - Cousins is a guy that will take sacks like crazy so I'd like to get after him.
