Saw someone mention Halloween Kills in the movie thread, so I thought this might be worthwhile. The Halloween reboot/sequel was a little dumber than I hoped but it had some great moments (especially that long take following Michael). I think my shifted expectations and the rumors of a high body count will give me reason to enjoy Kills even more.

Anyway, it's October aka peak horror time! Last year was the first time I tried to do a new horror every day in October and I really enjoyed it. This year I planned ahead a bit more so I already have too many options to get me to 31.

So far:
10/1 - Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
10/2 - Sleepaway Camp
10/3 - Candyman (1992)
10/4 - The Wailing
10/5 - Attack the Block, Halloween II

Candyman has been on my list for a while and with the new one out I wanted to see the original first. Unfortunately it's not streaming on any of the apps I have access to, but I do have access to the internet... Excited to see it tonight!

The Thing (the original, not the dogshit prequel they did a few years back) deserves a watch. One of the best horror movies ever made imo, and holds up fantastically thanks to the practical effects.

Just gave it the annual watch last weekend. That movie is a masterpiece. Perfect blend of mystery and balls to the wall gore.

If you guys haven't, watch hell house LLC. It's a found footage movie but really well done imo. I've seen a ton of horror movies so I'm basically desensitized to them but some parts of that movie got me.

Halloween Kills was garbage. Seems like they focused on brutal kills rather than on atmosphere and scares. Shouldn't be surprised, that's pretty much every mainstream horror movie nowadays. The original 70's one is one of my favorite movies of all time and the parts that are effective is when Michael is just standing still and staring. Like when Tommy looks out the window and Michael is staring at him from across the street. That's scary. Not an old lady playing with a drone getting a fluescent tube to the neck.

Also a really good foreign horror movie is called the wailing. It's a slow burn of a movie but the last 45 minutes or so I was on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend if you like atmospheric horror movies.

Haven't gotten to Hell House LLC or Halloween Kills yet (I've heard good/horrible things respectively), but I watched the The Wailing this month and really enjoyed it. The more I thought about it afterward the more I liked it as well. Definitely a slow burn but the way they build everything made me feel as conflicted as the main character when they face their dilemma toward the end.

I also finally watched The Host (2006), which is quite different tonally but another classic out of South Korea.

Wife loves Horror movies but we both had never seen the Halloween movies.

Rankings go thusly:

Halloween 2
Halloween
And none of the rest are really worth talking about. 4 and 5 weren't bad. I hate Rob Zombie movies so we skipped those, 3 was fucking weird, and h20 was really not scary at all, along with the rest of the new ones.

Horror is my favorite genre. I’m not sure it’s worth mentioning the classics.

Of the lesser discussed movies that you guys may never have heard of, The Shining, Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are excellent.

FRT Session 9 is one of my favorites that a lot of people seem not to have heard of. I love slow burn psychological thrillers, and it is one. If you like the idea of sneaking into insane asylums, this one is for you.

On the other end of the spectrum is Mandy. I’ve never taken acid or killed a zombie, but it’s hard not to feel like you’ve done both after watching this. Or any Nic Cage movie TBH.

Speaking of tripping, my most recent watch was Midsommar. It was fine. A hole or two, but worth a watch if you like atmospheric horror and movies designed around cults.

I’d describe it as atmospheric and heavy like The Witch and Hereditary. Similar themes. Not as heavy as those though. I felt like I was getting waterboarded with those two, which when I’m watching horror movies is exactly what I’m looking for.

I like heavy, atmospheric stuff that makes me feel like I need to pause and make sure my family hasn’t died halfway through the movie.

Evil Dead was only good because Bruce Campbell is an amazing actor. Basically everything he touches is gold.

Can't argue about Bruce (obvious from my avatar....) but I think Evil Dead was a legitimately good horror movie even apart from him. The sequels relied more on Bruce's own charisma, but the first one really didn't.

ETA: Having Sam Raimi direct probably helped....

Hated Halloween 18, but had fun with Halloween kills. If you’re going to be bad be fun bad like I felt this one was.
Yeah I enjoyed both of the Halloween movies. Michael Meyers is my dude so it's always a good time seeing him murder some kids. I didn't like the Hospital side story in kills and that took me out of it a bit. But the ending made me happy. Seeing Michael happy makes me happy. And he's happiest killing people.

I re-watched the first three Nightmare on Elm Street films.

They hold up as great bad movies.

Though Nightmare 2 is hilariously, weirdly gay.

The coach's death scene, where he is whipped with towels, has to be one of the greatest things ever.

I really liked nightmare 2 was different. And would rank them in the order they came out.

I love horror movies and October really gets me in the mood for them, I’m actually watching Midsommar right now.

I do really like ghost themed movies the most, movies like The Grudge and The Ring. Sinister and Insidious are also favorites of mine.

I agree completely on The Thing being an all-timer. I also enjoy The Fly from that similar time period.
