Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd vote it's a likely no... I think with a solid spring he could be acquired by another team, but honestly he is due for AAA in 22 and 23 he will get a chance for an MLB roster...
He's already 27 which would probably make him less likely to be taken (decreased valuation), but I do think he'll be in line to get some kind of look in Cleveland in '22 if he is unclaimed and continues to perform.

Given his huge improvement of strikeouts and walks in 2021 and a bump in power, I was really hoping they would give him 20 games in September just to see if there was something there.

I'm on your side in this argument to be honest, but at the same time, we do need to figure if he had a fluke in AA... His numbers were not near anything he has previously done before and he isnt a slouch in the OF either. He lacks the arm of a RF, but can play there. I'd say I wouldn't be scared defensively to have him play in CF or LF everyday from the defensive standpoint. Let's see if he can produce that AA bat at AAA this season...

He really cooled off down the stretch... Overall he wasn't that great after July 1st, though he still managed to keep the vastly improved plate discipline.

Looks like he has the potential to be one of the few true late bloomers, though he will have to fight extremely hard to get a shot/roster spot.

My expectations are low, but somehow he figured out how to stop striking out which is really odd at his age. Last season with nothing to play for at the end and garbage in the OF would have been the perfect time to give him a shot with no downside.

Just observed that the tougher roster crunch will come in the minor league phase of the R5.

I count around 50 players worth protecting and there are only 38 spots available for protection. I think we'll lose a handful in that part and will probably release as many before that. Especially 2016 draftees are at risk, because they're entering the last season of team control before minors FA, namely: T. Tully, B. Krauth, D. Clemmer, T. Brooks, R. Burgos, G. Collins, S. Arias, A. Call (and even D. Johnson).

They have a ton of young IFA depth prospects they'd probably rather protect like Planchart, W. Vasquez, Paz, M. Ramirez, W. Paulino, Sk. Rodriguez, S. Morillo, J. Ramirez, V. Nova etc

Time is running out on a lot of those. That's where the lost 2020 season hurts most

Who is on that list?

Who is on that list?
I have at least 25 bats, 10 of them C (Leon, Rivera, G. Collins, Melendez, M. Ramirez, Paz, Planchart, Donovan, Friscia, Caddell) plus Bracho, Fermin, O. Gonzalez, Call, Brooks, Benson, J. Rodriguez etc etc, most appear on roster resource (FG).

20+ arms too I'd suspect we wouldn't cut in a normal R5 year.

MLB Pipeline's trio of prospect guru's (Callis Dykstra and Mayo) has a listing of each team's most interesting (at least to them) Rule V prospect... For the Indians..it's Oscar Gonzalez.. and for what he brings in today's game.. that's not a bad choice..

Link to the article: https://www.mlb.com/news/rule-5-draft-eligible-prospects-for-each-team-2021

The list is extensive.. it's right in many cases.. it's wrong in just as many, perhaps..but there are a few names that might be of interest to the Guardians, provided they clear a spot on the roster to allow the acquisition to take place.. The guys to consider and a thought or two:

Samad Taylor from the Blue Jays.. Strikes out a bit too much, but can run.. fields the ball very well in more than five spots.. and hits for power and average (0.888 OPS / 141 wRC+). He's the kind of "roster crunch" gem that makes a club and makes it better..

Bubba Thompson... from the Rangers.. is a pure athlete.. runs well.. throws well.. hits... but has had a bit of trouble staying on the field haing a litany of minor injuries that have kept him off the field.. He strikes me as a late bloomer that, given the chance, can improve on his 0.828 OPS numbers at AA w/ 25 steals at every level he plays from this point forward.. He's worth a look.. at the very least..

Griffin Conine.. from the Marlins.. was on his way.. two years ago then the bottom dropped out during the 2019 and covid seasons.. I D K if he's worth the time, but, his name says he grew up in baseball.. and you can never discount baseball IQ as a resource..

Thoughts?..

Now with the fact Arb deadline is moved up, we will see if we keep Zimmer or not since he is arb eligible... We also may sign Hedges to a two year deal at a lower than projected number by sources.

Does anyone have the list of Cubs hitters available for the Rule 5? Our new hitting coach may want us to bring someone in from the organization that he had an eye on. Plus we are low on arms, so Stephan type of move cannot be ruled out... So someone like LHP Seth Corry of the Giants could easily be a target. RHP Tahnaj Thomas, who we traded to the Pirates also could look good as a reliever for a season as well. Neither guys has the best of commands, but maybe in Cleveland they can correct that.

I thought Oscar Gonzalez is no longer eligible for the Rule 5 draft…

Hard to say but I believe we have to side with @BimboColesHair on this argument over a beat writer, but we really won't know until the draft unless someone publishes it somewhere outside of here/in the open to get the guys to stop writing his name
