Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I find the overly simplistic dismissal of the effects of different injuries to be a lazy analysis from people who otherwise go to great lengths to find statistical justification to make the point that Mayfield simply sucks for no justifiable reason other than he just isn't good, period.

Injuries don't always have a consistent effect on performances. I think for the majority of the Cinci game Baker was feeling pretty good and it was reflected in his performance. He then injured his heel at some point during that game.

IMO the heel had a significant effect on his throwing accuracy against the Pats. The that game he also hurt his knee. which couldn't have helped matters.

All of that seems to have carried over to the Lions game. IMO Mayfield should have been benched much earlier in the Pats game, and they had no business playing him at all against the Lions. Some people want to blame Baker for the fact that he played that game when it should fall squarely on the Browns coaching and management.

If you make even the slightest attempt to put this sequence together it falls into place but apparently that isn't worth considering to people who already have their mind made up that everything is Baker's fault, Baker sucks, and there is no room for disagreement. And apparently this sucky version of Mayfield is all he'll ever be, he has no chance of ever improving over what we've seen this season. It's apparently a proven fact that is beyond refuting in the minds of certain people.
What you say here is spot on. Baker should not have played against the Lions and that decision falls squarely on the head coach. People have a really short memory on how dominant Mayfield was over the final 10 weeks last season. Off the charts good. But what he did did last season matters nothing to all the haters here.

Paul Simon sang it in the song The Boxer...."a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest". That Mayfield was the third highest rated quarterback over a 10 week stretch last season doesn't matter. It's simply disregarded...because Mayfield haters will simply disregard such nonsense.

20 years of horrendous football ended with this guy. And now the call is for his head on a platter. Mayfield should demand a trade out of this ungrateful city.

Tellin it like it is.

Other teams are sitting their starting QB for varying reasons ranging from injury to illness with minimal negative effect on team records. Meanwhile the QB is getting time to heal, to rest, to come back fresher and in better shape than he would otherwise be in if they kept them on the field. Those players do not suffer negative fan reaction from missing games or from their level of play being negatively affected.

The Browns, OTOH, keep limping Mayfield out there in spite of obvious and known injuries. They keep saying his ability to perform is not adversely affected but everyone who has watched knows this isn't true. Mayfield gets the full brunt of the blame from fans who refuse to consider any possibility that his physical problems have any effect on his erratic performance. This is reinforced by statements from KS, from AVP, and from Mayfield himself. Meanwhile our $6 million backup who knows the offense inside out rides the pine.

Which approach is the smart approach? Which approach is the correct approach?

I thought KS and Berry were supposed to be some of the smartest guys in the league?

Now the window of opportunity to rest Mayfield has passed and we're forced to run him out there again in a must win scenario. If his injuries continue to take him downhill and his performance still sucks I'm putting the blame on the Browns decision makers. Hopefully Mayfield somehow recovers well enough to perform at a level closer to his peak and not what we've been seeing much of this season.

This Baker is better than Andy Dalton talk is really insane to me.

Dalton had five winning seasons to start his career, including 2015 when he was really incredible.

Sure, Baker is better than Dalton post decline- but the first five seasons isn’t even a contest.

Bingo. Thanks for being level headed and comparing Dalton’s start to his career (which is what I was getting at). Obviously no one would take Andy Dalton over Baker right now.

The only thing Pettine said quite often that was true is this is a "What have you done lately league". Not what you did last season, not what you did two games ago, etc. If you suck right now your team, your city, your fans are going to shit on you. Was and always will be like that in football. My guess is it's partly because the season is 16 / 17 games as opposed to basketball or baseball. Every damn possession matters, not just every game.

Not getting my hopes up but the universe owes us a healthy QB1 who has a great game and look more like his pre-injury self.

I would love for this to be true - but I thought his injuries were the kind that he needed to suck up until the season was over (aka weren’t going to get better until he rested)?

For his labrum this is true. I don’t know about the knee and heel injuries.

My guess is that he simply had a good practice and it’s not indicative of his performance tomorrow.

Van Pelt also said after one of the injuries (initial shoulder I think) he saw absolutely 0 impact on Baker's throwing.

Stefanski should sit the entire offense in a room Sunday morning and have them watch a splicing of Mayfield's 21 straight completions against the Bengals on the toad last year followed by the game winning dime to Peoples Jones. Stefanski should end the film session by telling them that's what this team has at quarterback if everyone does their job.

This has gotta be a cult right?

I don't think you could use Baker Mayfield and accountability in a sentence without getting flak here.
