Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think i’ve calmed down now about the injury. The fact is if you look around the league having a back up PG like Rubio was a luxury. If you look at most of the NBA rosters there is a vast difference in ability between the starting PG and the back up PG spot.

I’m willing to give Pangos some time to grasp what is now going to be asked of him. If he can’t do it they will have to do it by committee.

Good for you I’m still bummed. Rubio was having a hell of a year with us and a tremendous leader. Fucking sucks

I agree it sucks. But when I took a moment to look at all the rosters and the back up PG situation we had in comparison…it was a luxury. I’m grateful for it while they had it.

It was a luxury in the sense that it was a huge advantage we had over other teams - not in the sense that it’s not necessary to our success. Rubio wasn’t just a backup PG. He functioned as arguably the most valuable sixth man in the league while also at the same time playing alongside Garland and closing games. I truly think he was the 2nd most important player to the team this season and without him we’re not going to have the same team success. I’m especially worried that Garland will break down having to shoulder an enormous creation load now on a roster without any other ballhandlers.

What's a fair deal for Rubio, if we extend him before July 1st? 3/50? 4/65?

Not to be harsh, but tearing the same ACL twice is not good. He wont be the same when he comes back and it will be a full 12 month recovery because of age and already injured. They had issue with the scar tissue just getting an image, will be worse trying to heal.

I love the guy, but we need a backup pg before then, need to move on till he is healthy, and then we can evaluate and offer.

Really sucks though, I love Rubio.

Love to know how negotiations was going on behind close doors, for a extension , Like to know if he was open for a reasonable extension or basically told the team he was keeping his options open, if it was the ladder, That would make it a lot easier to dump him for whatever is best for the team, and honestly it should still be for what’s best for the team, he basically had to be beg to play for us this year, from numerous insiders reports….

Now I appreciate everything he brought to the table, and wish him well on his recovery etc etc……

I think he is done. Tearing the same leg twice is a career killer.

He just turned 31 in OCT - he could come back if he wants to, but you are right - he probably wont be the same. But having said that, he will have had a year's less wear and tear on the rest of his body, if he comes back at 32 and could still have a couple more productive years.

I think he will be close to a vet min guy if he decides to come back. You are correct on this one, its never been good for players that tore the same ACL twice.

He should just be the first NBA player to attempt a comeback after a total knee replacement. Sooner or later it's going to happen.

Rubio will play NBA basketball again, but I don’t see how the Cavs make any significant investment in him. My guess is that he will miss camp and the start of next season. I could theoretically see him back playing by the end of 2022/early 2023. Even giving him a roster spot on a min. deal is tenuous. He may not even be interested in that, may even rehab overseas. If he was down, I would do it for a very small, minimum or slightly above…but a 1 year deal…only to continue possessing his bird rights…with the understanding..get healthy…show us what you have left and if it all checks out, hell yeah we would talk longer term and bigger contract the next summer.

That being said, I think the Cavs are now highly likely to use Rubios near 18mil as the basis for a bigger move to address a need. That ends the bird rights thing even if he did want to eventually come back. But this is a cutthroat business. Dan is always willing to take $ on to make the team better or to gain an advantage by extracting assets and Altman Is not afraid to make a deal. They have to take the hand they’ve been dealt and make the best out of it. With RR healthy the Cavs likely weren’t trading him without getting an amazing return…but now they have a perfect vehicle sitting right there, a contract that can have value to certain teams and a contract big enough to make us real players in multiple.
