Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We will keep at least one of Zimmer/Mercado because they are solid defensively, even with bad offensive numbers they are plus OFs hence why they weren't cut... Though how the OF shakes up, that's something that will be hard to know since I don't think we will stay put honestly with who we have.
They weren't cut because there isn't anybody else to play the corners at this time. We need Chernoff to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. Actually make that 2-3 rabbits.

One will be kept to offset the batting... we have a lot of left handed OF hitters so at the current moment Mercado will be kept to make sure they can have someone of the opposite hand. Vice versa if we get two Right handed OFs... they likely will keep Zimmer then as the 4th OF, to make sure they can have the defense in place late games since getting bats is priority over the defense at the current moment.

Well that's how I would personally handle things...

What's wrong with using Kwan as the 4th OFer? He's on the 40 man and isn't an MLB failure yet like Mercado and Zimmer. Maybe our corner OFers are Kwan and Rosario, which one of Mercado/Zimmer would you keep then?

The one with the better preseason/spring...

They will want Kwan to get everyday ABs so one of Mercado/Zimmer will get a 4th OF spot... 4th spot in my mind has always been defense over offense while your best three hitters are the starters normally.

What a mess! We're in for a long winter it seems.

Virtually all OF options of value that we'll likely see in the next 2 years are from the left side in the farm (Valera/Kwan/Palacios/Jones). When we're talking RH options we're looking at guys like OGon and Call. Mercado is just a little below league average vs lefties in his career which means he has a job. I can see a midseason Zimmer for hopefully a little more than a bag of balls kind of trade depending on how things go. Despite his age I think other teams will see more in him than Jake Bauers.

For now though I'd like to see one OF added from outside and if the youngsters can push Zimmer out of town (and maybe Mercado afterwards) then by all means let them.

The thing about OF positioning is with 3 OF for 2 spots and 1 almost every day guy (Straw), the 3 non-every day OFs are still going to play more than 2/3 of games on average, especially when you factor in filling in on DH, filling in for Straw, etc.

Maybe one can play 80%, one 70% and one 60% of the time... having Kwan only play like 80% of the time should not frighten the management IMO.

If you are going to play on a reduced budget I think it is crucial that you let players have the chance to fail at the major league level rather than just assume their weakness will cause them to fail. I think Kwan has earned the right to prove he is as bad a hitter as Zimmer and Mercado on a team desperate for corner OF bats.

At the same time, they aren't going to keep Kwan on the MLB roster if he isn't getting close to everyday ABs. If Kwan doesn't have a starting spot he will be back in AAA... guys out of options like Zimmer and Mercado will compete for the bench spot/final spot. They won't get everyday ABs...

after the last 2 days, that doesnt take much

Actually for once, it's not as big of a gap as it used to be. Hard to say Berry and Altman did a bad job at all, problem is inexperienced head coaches with them while Antonetti has a hall of famer head coach... and a front office that other teams take his assistants. I mean the Shapiro tree of front office is kind of vast after all...

So I saw Mr. Plesac today - it has been awhile. Almost forgot how strong that guy is.

Strength aside, sure hope he can clean up his mechanics before the season starts because what I saw wasn't real sharp

Interesting.. a note on the mechanics of a projected starting pitcher in January..

And it's currently as strong of a field as I can remember!
Yeah, it's kind of damning with faint praise. Probably best to compare them to the other teams in the division.

In person or on net?

Guys, the issue with our young team is they are locked out of Az and are on their own. For someone Kluber, no big deal as he knows what to do. Someone like Plesac or McK could use some additional refinement. Even Palacios could use time in BP in OF reading balls off bats. Wasnt it Civale that shortened his arm action last off season. What is Plesac working on?

Doubt this CBA gets nailed out soon. Even if done for opening day, our youngsters are hurt more by not having our staff eyes on them in person in Jan.
