Mobley changed the landscape.

That's when you know the Cavaliers have a transcendent player. Koby pushed a wrong button with Collin/Garland co-existing, it resulted in a lot of terrible losses. The Kevin Love contract people ripped him apart for. The trade of Rubio people ripped him apart for. The return for Larry Nance Jr was underwhelming and people ripped him apart for.

As things played out, Koby now looks like a genius playing with house money.

But don't let Mobley falling in his lap distract you from Koby getting extended and promoted. There's always luck involved and we finally hit again.
How did Koby push the "wrong button" with Sexton and Garland? They were the best players available at that their respective draft slot.

A lot of you repeat the same things thinking internet fandom = facts

It’s better to be lucky than good. That’s for sure.

When you constantly sit in last place, there's buttons standing out. I didn't get into full detail, but I can add a few more:

The decision of drafting KPJr and adding him to a culture-less team. The fallout to that was a waste of an asset.

The handling of Drummond. Even the weird idea of landing Drummond. Total desperation. But not getting a piece for him had fans losing faith in Koby.

Jarrett Allen falling in his lap was a godsend, and totally deserving to a young GM who's team was failing at developing any kind of continuity.

Not adding a wing in the off-season still shows its ugly head.

Mobley is the guy that makes this all work. Lost Sexton. Still good. Lose Rubio, still good.

Without Mobley, both JBB and Koby aren't seeing these nice extensions. Dan Gilbert, and fans are extremely satisfied with the Cavs direction and that's because Koby went through a few trials and tribulations, but now it's leveling out.

And back to Sexton, he wasn't the best selection at the 8th slot. Unfortunately SGA wanted no part of Cleveland. Michael Porter Jr got paid before Sexton because why? He's a better talent but a huge risk, and thankfully dodged.

Going forward, the button of starting Garland and Sexton will be a huge mistake, and that's on Koby to figure out.

80% of gms hit the wrong buttons

I think Koby is doing fine, but getting lucky in last years lottery probably saved his ass. How many wins do we have with any other draft pick but Mobley (maybe Barnes)?

Ok….

This has become standard operating procedure in pro sports. Now Koby will hire a “GM” who does something that isn’t quite defined while Koby continues to call all the real shots.

I doubt they hire anyone and just shift Mike Gansey up to GM.

Koby has drafted 6 palyers in the first round in 4 drafts and 5 of them are NBA players, and Windler has even been showing signs of life lately as the 6th.

That's a win. Not drafting any busts with lottery picks is very good. Milwaukee and Phoenix last years finals teams can't say that. The closest thing to a bust is KPJ who is now starting for another team. I chalk that up to extenuating circumstances like you would if a guy was good but was lost to career ending injury.

2 guys who get min who were undrafted.

There will always be questions why he didn't draft the best possible guy at the spot or the guy who fit better at the spot, but I think his talent evaluation has been very good so far.

I think it is hard to say he hasn't majorly increased the talent level on this team since 2018. He's made good moves and largely mitigated the mistakes he has made. Deserves this second contract.

I could see Koby hiring a GM to do some of the things he isn't good at or doesn't enjoy. I could see him getting someone who connects with players better and can help smooth out any locker room conflicts. Basically the job Griff wanted when he pushed to be promoted with his extension.

It might be someone internal but giving them the GM title could help empower them and gain the players respect.

I love it! Stability is such an underrated aspect of this sport. Having someone who knows the team & the system long term is important. I'm looking forward to many great years with Altman @ the helm. He certainly knows what he's doing.

Kudos to Gilbert as well for not being afraid to spend. We have a title thanks to his willingness to do so (& LeBron of course).
