Super Bowl LVI - Ohio vs Odell

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How long would this game have gone if the first TD didn’t win in OT? They could have easily ended up playing 6 or 7 quarters.

I’m not sure there’s a great solution that doesn’t involve something that could be argued as unfair.

What’s with people coming to the defense of the shitty NFL OT rules?

They’ve always sucked…they’re not the reason Buffalo lost the game but they still suck.
Agreed 100%.

There's nothing wrong with pointing it out again for the 100th time. It sucks and has always sucked.

I'd rather a game come down to who has better depth than a coin flip, personally.

The regular season rules without the potential of a tie? If you score a TD on the first possession, then the other team has a chance to match and sudden death after that point.

People whining about overtime rules don’t give a fuck about defense. It’s lazy. All the defense needs to do is not give up a TD on a single drive and both sides get the ball. If you can’t do that, you deserve to lose. Full stop.

So the other team doesn't have to play any defense based off a coin toss and one touchdown ...

All the scoring team would have to do is stop the opposing team from scoring a touchdown on the next drive and they win. Why does no one care about the defense! :chuckle:

Cause it's not shitty and a good system.

Play defense and stop them.

Beats the hell out of college rules where we just start within scoring range.

Those aren't the regular season rules.

Besides, sudden death has the exact same innate "unfairness."

The chance one team gets more possessions than the other.

The Bills majorly screwed up their defense with 13 seconds left. They chiefs only had enough time to run 2 plays and they had 2 TO's left so they didn't care about getting out of bounds. What do the bills do? They play everyone deep and protect against the sideline leaving the middle wide open. Just unbelievable bad defense on that that drive.

Mike Golic suggested a 12:00 OT period years ago. No sudden death. That wouldn’t work well for postseason though as you would either need to have multiple 12:00 no sudden death periods OR sudden death after 12:00 which would mean gaming the clock to go into sudden death before scoring. I despise the college football system though so there’s probably not a perfect system. Golic’s idea is the least worst I’ve heard.

I've never understood why they don't adopt this model. In the regular season, if no one scores, you end the game in a tie as it does today. In the post-season, you keep playing until someone wins. At that point, no one is going to complain about an amazing game that keeps going. It's simple, clean and it works.

The NFL is so stupid all the time. Way too many "smartest guys" in the room.

This is no defense to not getting a stop with :13 left on the clock, but it’s pretty simple to me:

Do what you’re doing now, except if the first team scores a TD, the opponent still gets a chance to possess the ball with a chance to tie the game. If they do not score a TD, they lose.

If they tie, keep playing.

How is this not obvious? Why does a TD change everything where a FG does not?

I love the college football OT format and can see it working in the NFL, with a few tweaks. The kicking is better and offenses are more explosive, so, rather than starting at the 25, I'd have offenses start possessions at the 35 or 40 yard line. After the first OT, teams have to go for 2. You play until you have a winner.

Golic's idea isn't terrible, but another 12 minute period might be too much. You could see that both teams were gassed in OT after that crazy ending to the 4th quarter.

The first mistake was kicking deep. They should've squib kicked to take some seconds off the clock. Then they played that soft coverage and KC had just enough time to throw underneath and get into field goal range.

All in all, it was a fantastic game, but I left with a bad taste in my mouth for Bills fans who never even got a shot in OT. Something has to change there..
