Just stop.

He’s proven in those 4 years he has potential to be a top 10 QB, none of those other guys offer that.

He's also proven, over a wider sample size mind you, that he has the potential to be a bottom 10 QB as well.

Love it.

Debating who are the better QB table scraps IN the Watson safari thread.

Go Browns!

I agree 100%.

The issue is some of us see his ceiling as being like the 8th/9th QB in the conference, and that doesn’t get it done.

You can’t go from acknowledging that adding Watson would have made us clear contenders, to also thinking Mayfield made us a contender. If that was the case, you should have been adverse to giving up assets.
Even if they add Carr the browns will still have the 7th or 8th best QB in the AFC, unless they add a top 5 QBtheir best bet of getting a better QB is radical realignment and being moved to the NFC in the next 5 years.

Mahomes, Allen, Rodgers, Brady, Herbert, Stafford, Burrow, Murray, Wilson, Prescott, Jackson

Ignoring Carr, Cousins, etc.......which 2 of the 11 QB's above is it remotely realistic Mayfield will be better than?

This is even setting aside the QB's that will come in to the league over the next 2 drafts that will be better than him too.......so he probably needs to be better than 4-5 of those guys to be a top 10 QB moving forward. So put it on paper which ones.
I think you're being generous leaving out Ryan, Tannehill, Mac Jones, and Wentz.

To me it comes down to extending the guy at the market rate for 2nd contract QBs. I don't think he's worth the money to be stuck in a cycle of medocrity because we don't want a "bridge" QB. Bring in a vet and draft a QB early this year.

Absolutely.

I’m very on board with bridge + rookie. My pref bridge is Winston.

Baker's ceiling is a different matter from Baker's ceiling with Stefanski as his head coach and play-caller.

I said back in December and January that the two were done working together. It was just a terrible fit and Berry and Stefanski have sort of earned the right to choose their own QB.

I see a scenario where Baker can go somewhere else and with the right coaching environment be more effective than he looked here. He does have upside: more in my opinion than the Marcus Mariotas of this world.

I don't think Watson chooses to come here, so if there's a universe where the Raiders move off Derek Carr that would represent a good outcome. Matt Ryan can still play but the financials of the deal would be problematic.

If we don't land Watson, we should just ride this year out with Baker. Any other option isn't going to move the needle enough to matter anyway. If we see someone we like in the draft we take a chance, if not we can look into a guy next year when there will be better draft options on the board. If Mayfield somehow gets it together (doubtful) all of this worrying will be pointless.

Cleveland sports fans: Fine wine palette and a Keystone Light budget.

It's been a minute since I typed that mantra. Here we are again.

I'm also into the idea of trying to pair like with like when it comes to the bridge QB and the rookie. That way there's not a crazy shift in the offense when the rookie inevitably takes over.

Winston/Strong and Mariota/Ridder seem like natural pairings.

If it's not Watson, I'd prefer bridge (Jameis) and Mullens for this season. I just don't love any of the rookies. Maybe our front office sees it differently though.

With that said, I want a guaranteed FQB locked up for 10-12 years.. and Watson would give us that.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you would not trade for Watson unless he would agree now to sign a long-term deal along the lines of the one signed by Mahomes?

Because otherwise, there is no guarantee he stays when his current contract is up.

The longer it’s out there that the Saints are basically singing songs outside Deshauns apartment and sending him love letters, the more likely I think that doesn’t happen. Not saying Cleveland. At all. It’s just like the Saints are literally pleading with Deshaun and he’s still not doing it… idk.
