The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Supposedly, if this story is successful they may turn House of the Dragon into an anthology and potentially tell more of the Targaryen story, so you may get your wish in a few years. I've read they've got three to four seasons planned for this story.
The overall show title, House or of the Dragon works well for that idea. But first things first, these first few seasons need to be massively successful and critically acclaimed. If that happens, then HBO is happy and more will flow. So a few one offs or two season shows under the House of the Dragon name could be amazing. And less risky at that time than launching a new show with a different title/name.

Given that Game of Thrones is still one of HBO's most popular and most watched shows, I'd be absolutely shocked if House of the Dragon isn't a mega-hit for them. It would have to be pretty terrible for it to flop imo. People are clearly hungry for more Game of Thrones and none of the other fantasy shows out there come close.

I’d kill for the Dunk and Egg stories to be adapted. Maybe a limited series or something. That book had me hooked. Read it in like one sitting. Not epic or anything but much smaller more intimate stories.

It seems like every major streaming sites wants to have one major epic fantasy. HBO already has their deal with GRRM in place so no reason to look elsewhere.

They just need that proof/testimony that the popularity is their with the first season or two of HOTD and as long as it is, which seems likely at Jack Brickman was saying, then I think we’ll see the Snow sequel in development, we’ll see further Targaeryen stories under the HOTD banner, we’ll probably see Dunk and Egg, and they’ll keep on going in that extended universe as long as it’s popular; drives subscriptions, and can be their fantasy flagship, if not complete flagship

They could just wrap up Dunk & Egg into House of the Dragon easily enough considering that those stories are all leading up to Summerhall.

I'm in the middle of a Game of Thrones rewatch in anticipation for House of Dragon. First I've watched since the series finale.

This show really was remarkable. I can't wait for House of Dragon, especially after seeing that trailer.

I popped for the dragon armor. If only Viserion had been wearing some. He had plenty of plot armor on at least.

Game of Thrones was a phenomenal series if you stop watching at the end of season six and see Dany actually making it to Westeros as the big climax and finale. Cersei gets crowned, Jon takes back Winterfell with the Night King looming, Dany arrives in Westeros. All the makings of a ton of great stories.

Better to let them play out in your head however you want over watching the trainwrecks of the last two seasons.

If you ignore the fact that Varys teleported to Dorne to meet with Ellaria and then somehow back to Essos just so he could ride with Dany back to Westeros, this is easily one of my favorite scenes in the series. Culmination of my personal favorite character's (outside of the last three episodes of season 8s) journey throughout years and years of following her.

I've become cynical about the show since its end to the point that I think the exact moment it started to go bad was the end of s4. Specifically when tyrion was let out of jail.

But in the moment, this episode was peak television to me. The first 20 minutes were the best 20 minutes in TV history imo.

Five is definitely where the cracks in the foundation that eventually brought down the house started to show. Butchering books four and five and cutting so much out from them made the ultimate ending make no sense.

I am just excited to have another high quality fantasy show to watch. Feel like I'm getting spoiled with this and then Rings of Power airing at the same time.

Maybe George will finish the books and prove me wrong but I just feel like a lot of what happened after, particularly in season 7 and 8, was due to Tyrion having an entire change of attitude compared to the books. Instead of a man hating his family wanting vengeance he was something else entirely.

Yeah, that was a huge part of it. He just went straight back to making no dick jokes at Varys. They also completely changed his relationship with Jaime.

I'd love to know why they decided to broach the subject of Tysha in season 1 only to completely shitcan it and never do it again, when Tyrion, in the books, never stops thinking about it.

I think you have to assume that, at some point around season four or five, the showrunners got burnt out and realized they didn’t want to take the series the distance it would need to go to be properly adapted and started cutting corners (or entire characters and subplots) to give them the opportunity to speed things up a bit.

The problem, of course, is that most of those characters and subplots they cut will likely play key roles in what happens toward the end of the series. Like, I highly doubt that fAegon’s plot will amount to absolutely nothing in the books to the point where it could be cut entirely. I expect him to not survive but I am sure he’ll do some important things that have significant repercussions, much like Quentyn’s death is obviously going to spur Dorne to side with Aegon instead of Dany and probably doom them in the process.

Quentyn on the whole wasn’t an amazingly important character, but his death is a stone dropped in a pond. The ripples will carry on after him.
