so they put that language in for shits and giggles? Come on now…

They were trying to minimize the amount he lost in terms of game checks while suspended. They can’t control a potential fine, I agree which is why the NFL is now trying to fine him a bunch of money. But they absolutely were trying to control how much he lost per game suspended automatically from his checks:
I mean what does it matter? A 20 million dollar fine is 20 million. It’s not really protected. The contract itself is very normal. Again would highly recommend you listen to the podcast with Jake Burns when he interviews Duffin.

You're fixating on a fine.

You're ignoring suspensions costing the player game checks.
But he is not limited to losing money on game checks. They would have been idiots to not structure the deal this way. It would have provided them with a lot less flexibility in the future with rôle over cap. Berry ‘s job to use the cap to maximize roster flexibility. The league rules allowed for a significant bonus that is a given. The browns did nothing wrong according to the cba and nfl rules.

What owners were upset about was the guaranteed money vécusse they had qb deals if their own to worry about.

Just curious... are you aware that if god forbid Deshaun Watson were to get into any sort of trouble again that the Browns can't go after literally any of his money?

Watson's contract is protected in a way that no other Browns player's is protected and I'd imagine no other player in the league's is protected either.

Unfortunately you're wrong, and if the league banned Watson from the league for good the Browns would re-coup all of that money.

I'm not talking about banning him for life man, c'mon. And for the record the Browns wouldn't get *all* of the money back even if that happened. They'd still owe him the full 45M signing bonus because they wrote language into the contract protecting that full amount no matter what.

If Watson is suspended (not for life obviously) again for any other reason moving forward, the Browns will not be able recoup any of his money or void any of his future guarantees.

Im sure it was a calculated risk and needed to get the deal done. Baker wasn’t taking us anywhere. If Watson is suspended the whole year we are in the same boat minus some draft picks.

While I am cleaning up the Personal Attacks, if you are going around shit-posting expect your posts to be deleted.

Is the poop emoji shit posting, because this whole situation is shit, lol

Which is true for essentially every contract in the league... Not sure what you're getting at.

If he's suspended any amount of time, they don't have to pay him for that amount of time.

Regardless of whether anyone likes it or not - and I know many are taking great glee in knowing Watson will miss more time - he will at some point become QB for the Browns.

Just a matter of when.

Your referring to the bonus for this year only that he already got. They can’t technically void the bonus for this or any other suspension yes. They gave him a ton of money upfront already, but it was entirely allowed, but it really does not protect him from having to use and lose it when and if fines go well beyond his minimum salary . If he did something horrible and got suspended. or kicked out, it would not limit the Browns or league after going after his future base salary which increases greatly after this year. Just a note , thé Browns likely plan to restructure Again in the off-season to further give them even more flexibility

Perhaps Goodell and the White owners can simply throw “lashings” on to the punishment as well?

With many willing to quit the Browns over Watson, feel it’s fair I simply quit the NFL after this charade….why are you even involved in this legal nonsense?

MLS season and playoffs upcoming
Euro soccer starts this weekend
Guardians hanging in there
NBA season start
Winter World Cup 2022

LOTS of competition for my eyeballs, and NFL games being predominantly in direct conflict with youth sports, makes this a pretty easy call. If it wasn’t fantasy with the bros, would have stopped paying attention ages ago…
Quitting the NFL because they are trying to punish a guy who, in the judges ruling, is an unrepentant serial sexual assaulter... Interesting hill to die on. Carry on.

Two things:

1. The bolded is a very general phrase that lumps a lot of actions, all bad for sure but with a pretty wide scope of scale, into one term, for maxima effect. For example, in the broadest of senses, Louis CK and Harvey Weinstein are both Sexual Assaulters. But I don't think we would compare the actions of the two men as equal or as deserving equal judgement and punishment. It also lumps all the claims/cases against Watson into the same category when, while they are all at least shady, there are several degrees of claims in the individual cases.

2. There are some people who believe that as Watson has maintained innocence and no criminal or civil cases will take place, there should be no definitive assumption of guilt or punitive judgement as the only people who truly know what happened are the people who were in the room and there will be no court case, criminal or civil for an active judge and jury to hear and rule on.

Neither point is a defense of Watson nor a denial of the claims that were brought forward.
