Hey, is anybody else thinking that maybe we should try to keep Rosario?

:runaway:

I would have no qualms if he was kept, but it's better on paper for the long term to move him...

Fangraphs has Amed ranked 12th out of 31 shortstops who have over 250 plate appearances. He ranks 9th in offense and 21st in defense.

So he's above average but not in the top third of regular shortstops. He got off to a very slow start offensively so if he keeps hitting over the next two months the way he's hit over the last two he could move up a bit.

At 26 he's moving into the prime of his career so the next four years or so he might slip into the top 10.

I would love to extend him but with so many talented shortstops in the system it seems likey at least one of them will be able to equal his overall production (offense + defense) at a much lower cost. So trading him would bring back talent at another position without weakening us at shortstop and save money. Seems like a no-brainer. The only question is the timing.

He's having a career year and it's awesome to see. Give him two more years of team control and I'd be fine if we were talking extension with him. A bird in the hand and all that.

Rosario will be a free agent in a little over a year. Fans have to, at some point, realize that when guys hit free agency, they aren't "ours" to keep--we have to be the highest bidder to bring them in. If we're lucky, there might be an exception and we can just be one of the highest bidders, but that's not something you count on.

When you have a very limited amount of money to spend, you don't spend that money to fix a hole that doesn't need fixing. You have Rocchio, Freeman and Arias ready to plug into the middle infield.

He's more or less right in line with his previous 2 full seasons. His WAR and wRC+ are higher because the league average hitter is a bit worse this season than previous seasons.

He had a blistering June that offset a terrible start. The dude is streaky; when on, he's like a rich man's Kwan. When off, he's like Myles Straw only he steals bases. He should have been worth something good to some team. Hell, the Phillies should have jumped at him.

Definitely streaky. Luckily this year he's been consistently good since mid-May

It's a great problem to have. I have been one who felt the Guards should have stuck with Rosario as an OF from Day 1 in 2021. I really thought his athleticism would make him a solid OF option. I am not a fan of forcing a player to be positionally flexible especially while that player is still trying to get firmly established at the big league level.

Anyway, the Guards at least have options. They could punt on the Rosario decision for a half-season if they decide to get aggressive in pursuing starting pitching by using middle INF prospects. My own preference would be to trade Arias or Freeman, in a way clearing room for Rocchio to have a full Triple A season in 2023. I think some similar determination may been needed in the OF as well. I keep beating the drum, the biggest issue with the Guards right now and going forward will be starting pitching. It has to be a top 10 staff if there is a desire to pry open the window of contention again.

Anyone hear what the 40 man roster move is to have Gaddis start tonight??!

No, but I'd suspect Castro is numero 1.

Next in line when Morris needs to be added back to the 40 are McCarty, Clement, Reyes and Call.

Could especially see a Reyes salary dump, if they've already decided to move on from him and non tender him. Quite similar to Eddie Rosario last year...

Just wanted to let you guys know that the largest comeback in Major League history is old enough to drink today.

Happy birthday, 15-14 comeback win over the 116-win Seattle Mariners!

I was 11 on family vacation in Hilton Head. We were at the pool, I decided to go back to the condo. Turned on ESPN and it was in the 4th inning but sat down and started to watch. Fucking Jolbert Cabrera

Two things beyond the obvious awesomeness of the comeback always strike me about this game:
  • The Indians didn't come back based on errors from the Mariners - they just strung together a bunch of hits and ran the base paths mostly well. One could make an argument that the Mariners should have been guarding the corners when Vizquel knotted it up, but that's not technically an error, so...
  • Eddie Taubensee hoisting Kenny Lofton at the end - traded for each other more than a decade prior in a very lopsided deal (in hindsight), then embracing each other all those years later.
