If Jimmy G is released, I wonder how much he would want to be paid.

Hard to imagine a ton of teams being interested this close to the season and the Browns certainly make by far the most sense.

I'm sure he would want to play for a contender and we are exactly that.

And in a system he has run a version of consistently the last few years.

Literally every single team in the NFL does it every single offseason, some teams do it with multiple players every offseason (Saints, Rams, others). It's perfectly legal within the CBA.

There's nothing at all about it that is a circumvention of the CBA, c'mon now.
I am not talking about legality within the CBA. Yes absolutely it is legal, however its still intentionally setting up contracts to get around the rules set forth, that is by definition is circumventing the CBA. Though you are absolutely correct the NFL currently looks the other way and allows all sorts of teams to do it. If Watson wasnt getting punished I wouldnt even bring it up.

However if Watson's suspension did go into next season, the browns are going to get LIT UP if they announced they renegotiated Watson's contract to something which will keep him from losing money due to an already issued suspension. It doesnt matter they already planned it that way, and that other teams do it on a regular basis. In this case Watson would go from losing 4 million/game (estimate) to 60k a game (based this year's salary).

I should have been clearer. I don't care if he ever took a snap. If Watson is suspended for the year, it would bring me joy to be the team who hands Kaepernick a bag of cash just to spite the other owners/Goodell.

My reasoning: Kaepernick would’ve been the cherry on top of the shit Sunday that was the Browns offseason.

He’s awful, but an 80 on Madden :)

I do think Antonio Brown has NFL talent; but he’s bi polar and needs some meds

I don’t think Jimmy is getting released in this scenario.

49ers gave him permission to find a new team, and teams know they won’t get much.

They almost have to release him before the season starts if no one trades for him. He’s making a shitload of money and basically the entire contract is non-guaranteed.

Who cares pay whatever is reasonable even if you got to pay a premium.

You get the rights to Watson (he’s gone for the year), but you still have a chance at a Baker clone to save your season. “Hello, McFly anyone in there?”

Edit: that scenario is like Biff in Back to the future 2; we got the sports almanac and the implants on Lea Thompson.

What I have been hearing about Jimmy locally:

1. The Niners want to "do right" by Jimmy by giving him a chance to start somewhere. They are committed to Lance no matter what this season. Jimmy makes a bit over 24 million this year, it isn't guaranteed until week one in September.

2. Jimmy's agent is famously also the agent for Tom Brady and other very high profile clients. He will use as much leverage as possible for Jimmy to be traded before week one to the team of his preference.

3. The Niners media are most afraid of Jimmy landing in the NFC West, especially Seattle. They would prefer a mutually beneficial situation, so that is why Jimmy hadn't been straight up waived. He is most likely headed to Pittsburgh or the Giants if not Cleveland.

4. Mentioned this before, but Jimmy has been on a reduced workload in camp as he strengthens his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. He lost a lot of throwing endurance.

They definitely would get lit up, but the only way Watson's suspension goes into next season and his contract DOESN'T toll would be some weird scenario where Watson plays 6 games in 2022, but is then still suspended into 2023.

So really this is much ado about nothing because the odds of the above happening are really slim. The Browns will inevitably convert the base salary into a bonus when the time comes (it won't be until 2024 if he's suspended all of 2022) and it won't be an issue.

You have to think that Jimmy's doors are:
  1. Start for a contender (Browns)
  2. Stick with a familiar system (Miami, where he only takes over if Tua fails)
  3. Start for a team that might lock you up long-term (Seattle)
Option 1 is probably the best option on the table. If Watson's out for the entire year, that is what I expect to happen.

I don’t think Jimmy is getting released in this scenario.

49ers gave him permission to find a new team, and teams know they won’t get much.
Finding a trade partner might be difficult though

His cap hit is $27m but is only $1.4m if he's released. It's hard to imagine many teams being interested in taking on that full cap hit and the 49ers would have to be heavily incentivized in draft pick compensation to share some of that money considering they can dump him and only lose $1.4m

It helps that Jimmy G and Jacoby Brissette are good friends and have played together. I imagine that this would make acquiring Jimmy G pretty seamless in the locker room and on the field.

I don't think it would cause any sort of rift. They both know who the starter is when Deshaun comes back.

Kind of contradictory, no?
Market value would have been better wording. When I trade, if I see a breakout; I’ll pay the ask price on premium. If we don’t try (making a reasonable effort) to acquire Jimmy G we are chasing pennies in front of a steamroller.

JG has to be #1 priority.

Great question: what is the upside to not getting JG?

Yeah I think if Jimmy G and his agent are thinking about this long-term, the Browns make the most sense of the teams who would be interested in him.

He could start a year for the Browns, be surrounded by a lot of talent, and he'd probably play well.

That would would help his 2023 free agency a lot more than going to Seattle and likely playing worse with worse teammates.
