If Jimmy G is released, I wonder how much he would want to be paid.
Hard to imagine a ton of teams being interested this close to the season and the Browns certainly make by far the most sense.
I am not talking about legality within the CBA. Yes absolutely it is legal, however its still intentionally setting up contracts to get around the rules set forth, that is by definition is circumventing the CBA. Though you are absolutely correct the NFL currently looks the other way and allows all sorts of teams to do it. If Watson wasnt getting punished I wouldnt even bring it up.Literally every single team in the NFL does it every single offseason, some teams do it with multiple players every offseason (Saints, Rams, others). It's perfectly legal within the CBA.
There's nothing at all about it that is a circumvention of the CBA, c'mon now.
I should have been clearer. I don't care if he ever took a snap. If Watson is suspended for the year, it would bring me joy to be the team who hands Kaepernick a bag of cash just to spite the other owners/Goodell.
I don’t think Jimmy is getting released in this scenario.
49ers gave him permission to find a new team, and teams know they won’t get much.

However if Watson's suspension did go into next season, the browns are going to get LIT UP if they announced they renegotiated Watson's contract to something which will keep him from losing money due to an already issued suspension. It doesnt matter they already planned it that way, and that other teams do it on a regular basis. In this case Watson would go from losing 4 million/game (estimate) to 60k a game (based this year's salary).
You have to think that Jimmy's doors are:What I have been hearing about Jimmy locally:
1. The Niners want to "do right" by Jimmy by giving him a chance to start somewhere. They are committed to Lance no matter what this season. Jimmy makes a bit over 24 million this year, it isn't guaranteed until week one in September.
2. Jimmy's agent is famously also the agent for Tom Brady and other very high profile clients. He will use as much leverage as possible for Jimmy to be traded before week one to the team of his preference.
3. The Niners media are most afraid of Jimmy landing in the NFC West, especially Seattle. They would prefer a mutually beneficial situation, so that is why Jimmy hadn't been straight up waived. He is most likely headed to Pittsburgh or the Giants if not Cleveland.
4. Mentioned this before, but Jimmy has been on a reduced workload in camp as he strengthens his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. He lost a lot of throwing endurance.
Finding a trade partner might be difficult thoughI don’t think Jimmy is getting released in this scenario.

pay whatever is reasonable even if you got to pay a premium.
Market value would have been better wording. When I trade, if I see a breakout; I’ll pay the ask price on premium. If we don’t try (making a reasonable effort) to acquire Jimmy G we are chasing pennies in front of a steamroller.Kind of contradictory, no?
You have to think that Jimmy's doors are:
Option 1 is probably the best option on the table. If Watson's out for the entire year, that is what I expect to happen.
- Start for a contender (Browns)
- Stick with a familiar system (Miami, where he only takes over if Tua fails)
- Start for a team that might lock you up long-term (Seattle)
