2022 Season | Series #45 | Angels @ Guardians | Sep. 12-14, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Oh he certainly could be pushed out by a better defender.

Again feel free to go back and review for yourself, a good reference point would probably be around his AAA callup in 2021. I do seem to recall plenty of people comparing Oscar's D to Franmil.

It really depends on where you set your reference point I guess.

Bimbo posted this on April 22nd in the MILB Thread:
If anyone said he's Franmil Reyes quality in RF, they're smoking something.

The former scout Bernie Pleskoff on twitter is a big Oscar guy and was slamming the table for the team to play him last season. He would post his good AAA days and just wonder about him not being called up. So that kind of put me on to following Oscar's stats myself and buying in and ultimately being a homer about his play and how it can only help the Guardians. Glad he's proving that now. Even with Jose Ramirez on the team, they are nowhere today without Kwan and OGon.

Heard on the radio (confirmed on mlb.com) that Gaddis is going tomorrow instead of McK who is now Friday and assume Bieber Sat. Knew something was up as he was pulled from his start last night in AAA. But, I don't get it other than need innings on Sat from everyone thus have a reliable starter. BUT, with needing 1 game from Sox in 4 to get tie breaker and the one at home sb the easiest to get, I trust McK over Gaddis by a country mile and half.

So, what does this mean?
1) Tomorrow vs Sox is a lot harder to get our 1 win that we need for tie breaker ... a win either tomorrow or in Chicago is worth 3 magic numbers (our win, Sox loss and tie-breaker adv).

2) It does help with pitching over this long stretch which is probably the real reason to do it. Bieber should give you 6-7 on Sat DH and thus only need a few relievers to help him then a lot of relievers to hep Gaddis if he went on Sat

3) As we are getting down on games remaining, I saw our big 3 able to go at least 4 more starts and McK able to go in last game for 5th start. There was even a way to get Quantrill an added start by skipping a 4th/5th starter on our off day. Now, McK can only do that.

4) This also does split up our 4th/5th starter for the last few outing -- again tax our bullpen less on the back-to-back fewer inning starter days of (Pilk, Morris) than (Bieb, McK and Quant) - but I suggested this a month ago when it was Civale and Plesac when scheduling their returns to the mound from rehab.

5) So, next Few Games look like
Wed - Angels - Quant
Thur - Sox - Gaddis
Fri - Twin - McK
Sat - DH - Bieber/Pilk
Sun - Twin - Morris
Mon - Twin - Quant
Tues - Sox - Gaddis (maybe Civale is back??? give him a few extra days than this weekend which I was hoping for)
Wed - Sox - Mck
Thur - Sox - Beiber

6) It complicates your roster moves. Bringing Gaddis up on DH day is clean and simple and would have left Curry in AAA if needed for later.

I assume Gaddis is a one-off start as they love to bring a guy up to start and send them back down and bring up a reliever. But, you got to send a guy down first? It has to be McCarty (can't be Clement or you have 15th pitcher on 28 man roster -- a no/no). When he goes back down, I assume Curry comes up (only pitcher left on 40 down at AAA other than Vargas - who I would prefer long-term). Then for DH, they can bring up McCarty as 29th man inning eater for help that day (or Vargas if they think he is ready), then ship them back down after game. Curry will be up until Civale can make a start but McCarty and Gaddis are on 15-day options only able to come up for DH or injury.

Sorry to ramble ... not trying to complain just think through the issues like a fake GM.

I’m guessing it’s solely to preserve the pen as best as they can. No other reason.

Have an example of people calling him Franmil Reyes out there?

Because there's a chasm between "He's Franmil out there" and "He's not good"

I still think he has a shot at being a DH if some of the Benson/Brennan/Valera/Jones group prove they deserve every day MLB AB's.
Whether Naylor plays DH, 1B, or a terrible RF, I have severe doubts his bat vs lefties justifies putting him in the lineup at one of those positions. If we had a Mercado type (I'm personally moved on from Mercado himself but the idea of it), we could slot them into the OF on those games freeing up OGonz to play the DH spot. I think it would be a considerably more cost-effective option than getting a second RH power bat especially when we arguably could use 2 of them, one for 1B and 1 for DH. So we get the Christian Walker type as well as the Mercado type which would round off the lineup nicely. Miller just isn't working in that role because he isn't hitting lefties.

Some "stuff" about Gaddis...

Big guy.. big hands.. big stuff, too.. Think Lance Lynn with a better FB..

He has a typical four pitch mix.. and throws all for strikes.. Over matches minor league hitters.. regardless of the level.. has his K-rate into the mid teens.. with his FB/CU as his most devastating combination.. Everything he throws moves.. that is.. nothing is straight.. He has and can pitch out of the pen (which is where I think he may eventually become the best he can be) where his already hard FB is harder, yet... In short.. this is a guy flying under the national pundit radar that has a chance to really contribute down the stretch..

He's easy to like and is competitive as hell.. Here's hoping his debut is along similar lines as he's pitched in MiLB... that would be awesome...

Bingo.

If the Guardians are going to have to potentially destroy their pen with a rookie starting ahead of a weekend doubleheader, much more preferable to do it on Thursday then Friday.

Plus now with Bieber going one of two doubleheader games it theoretically gives Francona more wiggle room to get weird in the other game with his bullpen guys.

Not a good start.. should be an E-5..

.. official scorer calls it a "no play".. that's a gift..

regardless.. Quantrill strikes out Moniak to start the game...

There are actually other reasons. The more troubling one is McK and Quant are facing innings limit and need an extra day to recoup and they choose now to sneak an extra day in. If so, this is not good for next few weeks.

The other thing that it means is that Civale probably only needs a few more days and will likely take Gaddis spot on Tuesday in Chicago. Otherwise, you replaced Gaddis with Pilk long-term in rotation (as Pilk paired up with Bieber is taking him out of the 5-man rotation). If this isn't true, I see the pen being worked more long-term with Gaddis in rotation over Pilk - but trust FO if they see Gaddis>Pilk when it comes to # of innings they throw as the 5th starter.

But, as you and others refer to, they want to split up the bullpen work ... Morris last night, Gaddis on Thurs, Pilk on Sat and Morris on Sun vs all 3 rookies going Sat and Sun.

Yet, when we say preserve the pen, it only really matters on preserving them on Sat (and how things are juggled) as each stater goes x innings no matter the day that they throw and needs y innings from reliever. These numbers do not change over 3-5 day workloads. As you are not changing much the throw each week just when. And, who we pair up with Bieber shouldn't change whether Fri or Sat ... if we are going for win, Clase closes for him if within 2-3 runs. If he wins big, you would see a Santos/Sandlin whether Fri/Sat to give Clase day/game off (as he has most innings).

Q strikes out the side.. three up.. three down.. 0-0

And the side ... no harm no foul but what 2 extra pitches and knowing he Ked his ass...

Name one poster who professed such a projection with even the the tiniest bit of sincerity.

Or admit to using bluster filled hyperbolic statements to reinforce your opinion(s).
Anybody that sees Oscar's BABIP as in anyway sustainable is suggesting that he is gonna produce at a HOF level...as I illustrated.

It isn't bluster or hyperbole to state the obvious.
