People who have a memory of the Lakers game recall Collin hurt his shoulder in that game and his shooting number took a nosedive.

He got a lot of easy points from Allen and Mobley kicking out to him on the break.

Surely, Mitchell will get those same looks and do even better.

That's what this is, a total home run for Sexton. He gets to go back to his preferred role – a fake "top dog" on a bad team, a ballhogging gunner with no conscience whose job it is to entertain the fans while Utah waits for the real difference makers to arrive.

And he got paid on top of that.

The Cavs really did a number on Lauri, though. What a giant fuck you by Koby. Never saw this coming.
neither did I, but it's clear that out of this whole deal, Lauri is the true casualty:

- if you're trading for Donovan Mitchell, Sexton gotta go
- Ochai (much as I was looking forward to him on the Cavs) really wasn't supposed to be here (due to Rubio injuries, injuries to the guy they traded his contract for, and losing both play-in games -- in a season that they would have likely made the playoffs without those problems).

which leaves Lauri as the one player that really stings to see go, as he either would have been a decent situational SF or "Kevin Love insurance". Now if Love is out or traded, that's another line-up black hole. Wade can fill in, but Lauri was further along in that role + being taller.

Sexton got the bag, close enough to what he was looking for, and guaranteed. Cavs have consolidation in the lineup, which is probably the best thing for merely discussing the team now. And a true all-star in the "Sexton" slot.

That season, the franchise launched an unprecedented, multipronged, full-throated marketing and coercion campaign for Sexton. Not so he could be the most valuable player or even rookie of the year but for the rookie All-NBA first team. Not only did the campaign fail, but the Cavs hadn’t done anything close to it for James — at any point during his 11 seasons in Cleveland — or for Irving.
....
In his first two years, he had no help on defense, leaving him more vulnerable to punishing pick-and-roll plays than most young point guards. Sexton blossomed into the team’s leading scorer, but an inability to see open teammates and feed them the ball occasionally grated on them, taking them back to those first days of Sexton’s tenure, when the franchise elevated him before he was ready, at their expense.
....
It’s important to note that through it all — the eye-rolling from teammates, the carousel of coaches, the grousing by media members (like me) and the bellyaching of fans who chose to dwell on Sexton’s faults — at no point did Sexton lash out, complain or do anything untoward when he could have.
Sexton was courteous to fans, respectful and friendly to reporters, laughed and joked with veteran teammates whom he sometimes annoyed, always supported new players when they joined the organization and constantly worked on his craft.
He just, well, couldn’t outrun his flaws or the Cavs’ losing while his flaws were on display.
....
There is no reason to dive deeply into the negotiations between the Cavs and Sexton over a new contract this summer. They didn’t exist, and anyway, he is on a new team with a contract he should be happy with (four years, $72 million) given his injury and what he was going to get this season from Cleveland. He deserved better from the Cavs, given what he’d done for them while they suffered through so many growing pains.
Meanwhile, the Cavs had earned the right not to overpay for him, given their shrewd and impressive measures elsewhere to vault quickly into respectability.

I presume Koby always saw Markkanen as an asset above all, to be dangled when an irresistible, franchise-changing trade scenario presented itself. And that's exactly what happened. Just business.

Now, as for JBB? I dunno. I have a feeling he absolutely hates to see Lauri go. I'm not sure what the coaching staff expected from him before last season, but he quickly grew into one of Bickerstaff's most trusted guys in crunch time lineups. That speaks volumes.

Markkanen's role in the starting 5 was probably underappreciated. The Cavs now have Mitchell in the backcourt but they lack a huge, easy kickout target at the perimeter and a space eater on defense. There's some truth in the notion that the "5th guy" in the new starting lineup only needs to make some wide open shots, but it's still an oversimplification. I'll be shocked if Okoro has any more gravity than he had last season. And that's a killer. When you have a small scorer like Mitchell, you can't have several non-shooters around him, and the Cavs already have one in Allen (and, possibly, another in Mobley). Add Okoro, and suddenly the floor really starts shrinking.

I actually think Koby and other FO people saw Markk as a part of the core group going forward. Ainge/Zanik just wouldn't do the trade without Markk. As for JBB, I fully agree. He even went to Finland to check Markk's training. Now JBB has to draw a different kind of game plan.

I am hardly a huge Garland fan, but his 3rd year was notably better than Sexton's 3rd year. Collin I get the sense is a proud man. This delusion is not healthy for winning basketball. He would rather play for loser and pad stats than play for a winner and sacrifice.

Honestly we dont know this is true at all. We know that Sexton got hurt, Garland stepped up and became an all star. This offseason Sexton was restricted free agent and was in the middle of negotiations when he was traded. Nowhere have I heard Sexton requested the trade or demanded a starting job.

I am not the biggest Sexton fan, he has his limits, but i just wont start bagging on him with unproven facts. He now got paid more than we were this offseason and gets a chance to play a bigger role in Utah than he would of in Cleveland, but anything else like him not willing to play the role the coach asks or wanting out is pure speculation.

To add to your point, I also think Sexton didn't really have a choice when Koby pivoted to getting Mitchell. He could have declined to play for Utah but that didn't leave him with any better options on where to play even if he wanted to stay with the Cavs. Mitchell would have taken over everything Sexton's role would have been. LeVert and Sexton then have to fight for 6th man minutes, possibly both in contract years.

The choice for Sexton was pretty easy. Lock up 72 million and hopefully play his way to a better team. Utah might be bad but he will be able to have consistent minutes to showcase himself to the league.

What is your point?

No, Sexton had no choice in the trade. But no evidence he asked for the trade, i am saying there is no evidence Sexton did anythign but be professional, i think you read my point wrong.

I was just adding to your point, sorry if that wasn't clear.

My bad, lol. I didnt like the piling on Sexton. He isnt anywhere close to as good as Mitchell, but attitude and effort was always there and i am rooting for him to do well as his career moves on.

He got more money from Utah, so that is a win for him, and he will get to be a bigger part of the offense there as they will lose allot...not saying Sexxton wants to lose, but dont think there is much of a choice with that roster.

Right, I don't think he wants to lose either but a player has to secure their money. With the movement that happens in the NBA now, it's not like he is stuck in Utah even if they are losing. If he plays well, he will get interest from a better situation and I'm sure Aigne will flip him for more assets.

Also Sexton has a lot of examples of what to do and not to do to get out of a losing team. I'm sure he realizes trying to play well, stay healthy, and be professional is the way out of a bad team.

He kinda did though. We couldnt pay another bench player 20M per.
I feel like the writing was on the wall when we got Levert.
One of them had to come off the bench and we couldnt pay both nearly 20M for that role.

Why? we were paying over 30 million for Love in that role, LeVert most likely comes off the bench next year at 20 million. we traded for Rubio at 17 mill 2 years ago, there are bench players making that for us.

I know what you mean, but still could of made the 17 million he is making now off the bench, just not in the cards for him.
