Classic Baseball Stuff

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
On this date in 1920, Elmer Smith of the Cleveland Indians hit the
first grand slam HR in World Series history.

About his big swing, Smith said, “It was a straight fast one about chest high I crushed over the fence in the first round with the bases full. I wasn’t a bit nervous, though I had missed a couple of spitters and I was in the hole with two strikes and one ball charged against me and I knew that these three lads on the sacks were pulling hard for me to deliver, while I couldn’t help but feeling the excitement in the stands. That home-run pitch was just what the doctor ordered. I hit it as squarely on the nose as I ever hit any ball and I could feel it was destined to travel the way it cracked off my bat.”

Tribe starting pitcher Jim Bagby became the first pitcher
to hit an HR in the WS in the same game, a 3 run bomb off
spitball throwing Burleigh Grimes.

Indians went on the win their first WS, prevailing 5 games to 2, best of 9.

Confession: I'm a PBS and documentary fan.

Anyway, the PBS series American Experience has a biopic on Roberto Clemente.
Very well done. Gives an insight to Clemente, the man, and not just baseball. I thought it was pretty interesting.
For those of you too young to collect "Bob" Clemente baseball cards, Clemente was the first Hispanic inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
