Did Koby Altman nail the rebuild?

It's usually 2 years for a acl recovery for somebody Rubio's age. It would not surprise to see a more effective player after another 6 months of strengthening

Pretty clear the Cavs are counting on a modest leap from Garland and a larger one from Mobley

All fair points.

Should be a more effective Rubio, but still within the limits of his recent career. He’s not going to become a lock down one on one defender or start hitting threes at a 40% rate.

The Garland growth should just be from a full year of experience and familiarity playing with Mitchell as well as experiential growth that hopefully shows up in the next years playoffs.

With Mobley, it’s the same as Garland plus the expectation of another jump up in both physical profile and skill development.

These are things you look for and hope to see REGARDLESS of how high they raise the feeling in just 1-2 years from now. You certainly wouldn’t want to see a leveling off or even worse a regression when it comes to Garland and Mobley

I don’t think anybody has called Mitchell a superstar…..but yes “core pieces” are players you don’t trade away unless you get a “knock your socks off” offer. Complimentary pieces are what you call your “very good” players such as Bojan Bogdanovic, McDermott, Hardaway Jr, Bey, Kuzma, Jerami Grant, etc
That complementary pieces list seems generous, but yeah.

Ummm, the only loss was Agbaji? We gave up lauri, Agbaji, sexton, three firsts, and two pick swaps in the deal…

As of now I wouldn’t do the deal again, I think we closed off too many future avenues for improvement and went all in too early. But the team can definitely prove me wrong next year and I hope they do…
Yeah, even setting aside the fact that the trade was objectively an overpay when it happened, there's simply no way you include Agbaji and Lauri.

lol what…?
Very few GMs or fanbases who would not have made that trade at the time it was made.
Well, there were only two teams even really willing to discuss the trade with Ainge at that point, and the Knicks were pulling pieces off the table because they felt as though they has already offered too much. So I feel pretty comfortable saying that every GM but Altman wouldn't have made that trade.

Compare what Ainge gave up to acquire Kyrie with what Altman gave up to get Mitchell.

Many of the teams in the league had already used the asset profile to be in the conversation for Mitchell on prior trades.

Teams like the Clippers, Nets, Bucks, MIA, and many other simply didn’t have the future 1sts to be a player in the discussions. Does not mean they wouldn’t have made a similar deal if they had those assets or wouldn’t have made the deal if they were in charge of running the Cavs.

Double post, was trying to edit it. Meant Fultz, not Simmons.

You don't make trades on what fan bases and other GM's would do. Danny Ainge traded away the number number one pick in the draft in 2017, when everyone was saying Fultz was 'can't miss', and settled for Tatum. And future picks.

He got the last laugh. Because really good GM's can envision stuff, us idiots can't.

"Ainge said he believes the Celtics may get the player they would have chosen at No. 1 at No. 3."

Ainge was playing chess, while everyone else was playing checkers. He knew Tatum was the best player in the draft, and most people didn't.

Yeah, agree. I felt like o was crediting Ainge in the post you’re mot quoting to referring to. But maybe that post is in a different thread.

In any event, I still do not believe that is was a massive overpay or a trade we should have avoided because of Ainge’s involvement. Not at the time it was made and not after one year of it being imaged out.

I just mean we got to judge the trade on the results it gets in the end, not what seemed right or practical at the time.

In the future, maybe they should just avoid Ainge. Should have known we'd pay a heavy penny. He just always seem to get the last laugh in these deals.

Utah wanted Lauri or it was no deal:

"Markkanen had just been traded to Utah, along with 2022 No. 14 pick Ochai Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three first-rounders and a pair of future pick swaps for Mitchell — a deal that never would’ve crossed the finish line without Markkanen’s inclusion. Utah wanted him. He was viewed as its trade centerpiece. “I had no idea. But is what it is,” Markkanen said when reflecting on the blockbuster. “It was tough at first because we really enjoyed our time here. Had a really fun year last season so it was tough at first. But then settled in and see the opportunity with Utah. Understanding the business, I know there’s always a chance. It’s not like I had any anger.” "

We would never have gotten Mitchell for what we did if he wasn't disgruntled. He was 25, led that Utah team to the post-season every year of his career as the #1 option, and Utah was going to re-build around him. He is exactly the scorer/play-maker this team needed after how last season ended to take the next step. And the Cavs did. I would do it again, and again, and again.

I agree but hope most people understand that is a multi year process.

How well does anyone think the development of agbaji would have gone should it have happened in Cleveland

Getting your ass beat by a mediocre Knicks squad isn't much of a step
