as the last few days of Spring Training come into focus.. the Guardians roster has a few fringe areas that need to be addressed, however, this roster is pretty close to being set.. A couple of notes:
1. Pitching.. The rotation or Starting Pitching Staff (Gavin Williams/Curry/Lively) will break camp off these three guys off the active roster. The Big Rig's place will be shared or given to old friend Carlos Carrasco with able/capable Tyler Beede and Joey Cantillo backing him up. Otherwise.. this is a very solid group that has performed wonderfully in the spring.. This can and should be the strongest part of the club, especially when the Big Rig returns.. Both Curry and Lively can and will be considered for the starting rotation and/or bullpen upon their readiness for play being affirmed.. Relief pitching has been devastated from the inside out. Trevor Stephan, Sam Hentges and James Karinchak have missed most or all of Spring Training.. The good news.. it appears that both Hentges and Karinchak (sketchy report on him) will be back. The schedule for their return is unknown.. Stephan is done for the year.. The pen is ably staffed with a solid core of veterans and hard throwing youngsters.. There will be some growing pains, however, there is enough vet leadership to overcome the inconsistency to be expected from guys like Tim Herrin, Cade Smith and even Hunter Gaddis. Both Herrin and Smith have options available to be sent to the minors if performance warrants. There are several choices in the minors to consider for the pen, if it comes to that... Eli Morgan and Nick Sandlin also have options... in the possible event they run into health or performance issues.. These four guys are the most vulnerable for demotion if performance becomes an issue..
2. Infield.. Was shown today that even Vogt/CleFO hasn't figured it out today.. Catching will be adequately manned by Bo Naylor while being backed up by Austin Hedges. Hedges should be given consideration for player of the spring with the way he's performed. If he can carry this into the 2024 regular season.. one area of major concern for the Guardians coming into the spring may be assuaged. History has a tendency to prove otherwise, imho.. David Fry represents a stop gap if either Hedges or Bo have any issues. Fry further augments the versatility of the squad by being able to stand in the outfield and attempt to NOT butcher anything that comes his way.. He also wears a first baseman's shovel from time to time for the simple reason that he won't completely embarrass the Guardians. Arias / Freeman / Rocchio will all shuffle into and out of the lineup on any given day with only Rocchio being designated, mostly, but not completely, for a single spot (SS).. Freeman and Arias will each play SS, 3B, & 2B... Freeman will play a lot of CF while Arias will add to his versatility as he can and should play some 1B & RF... This infield has a chance to be perhaps the best defensive group in MLB. Arias / Rocchio are the most vulnerable for demotion.. That would be unlikely..
3. Outfield.. Kwan is the LF'er.. will play every day.. Brennan and Laureano represent the next best pair for RF and some CF.. Freeman is slated for the starting nod in CF... That leaves Florial, who, for the life of me, I can't understand what he offers this squad.. He's the most vulnerable player on the squad, period.. I would rather see someone like Schneemann or Planez in that spot than this undisciplined windmill.. But that's just me..
