Bobby BradGOAT

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Canha is 32. His OPS+ the last three years, including this one, are 146, 124, and 111. His batting averages are .273, .246, .230. Slugging: .517, .408, .394. Looking at this trajectory, do we really want to buy his age 33 season?
The obvious choice would be to buy the trajectory of the 25 year old rookie's numbers eclipsing the downward trajectory of the more costly player.

I am agreeing on this, I still think we may see a one year deal type of thing with a guy like Canha to give us a stronger overall lineup and get Bradley days off against strong lefties. That being stated though Canha is actually better against righties than lefties so he doesn't fit a platoon partner at all...

1) Nobody is talking about giving Canha a three year contract.

2) If 'all' we got out of Canha is a .356 OBP and 2.8 fWAR...and position flexibility..it would be a hell of a lot better than anything we have now.

Lets see now...Zimmer or Mercado or Harold....or Canha....?

We could bring back Julio Franco.

I'll say this for Canha - he gets hit a lot. He leads the A.L. with 26 HBP's.

He's started 10 games at first base in the last six years. Since 2016 he's been strictly an outfielder.

Bradley's OPS+ of 106 this year will probably go up. Canha's 112 will most likely decline again at age 33. If you consider player cost and career trajectory, I doubt the Guardians will see Canha as an upgrade at all, and not worth the additional expense. Canha made just under $7 million this year; Bradley is making $570K.

Maybe the fact that he was 3-for-21 against the Indians this year and 1-for-14 at the Prog is contributing to my lukewarmness about giving him a few million to play left field. I'm not saying it's a bad idea; I just don't think signing a 32-year-old outfielder hitting .231/.752 whose offensive numbers have declined three years in a row is going to move the needle.

I'd sign Eddie Rosario again before I'd sign Canha. Eddie is hitting .292/.975 for the Braves since getting healthy and he's three years younger.

Canha would not be signed to play first base. He would be signed to play outfield and serve as insurance behind Bradley.

Eddie might be a decent back up FA plan, which is what he was last off season. But he can only play left field...and he probably isn't gonna get $8 mil.

We may not be limited to those two as options. McCutchen will likely be available. He might be an option for one year, and a solid presence.

In any case, we aren't talking about bringing in a long term major piece via free agency. That will have to come via trade. We need to bring in somebody who is a solid short term replacement, so that we don't have to see another 600+ PAs from Zimmer-Mercado-Harold, or another year of tryouts for kids who aren't ready.

I strongly feel that Bradley should be our 1B going into next year, but I still have major doubts...and I want the FO to bring in an insurance policy...preferably right handed...just in case. But we can't carry a player whose only role is backup 1B. He has to be able to play another position full time. Canha fits the job description.

In our situation, adequate is a major improvement over what we have.

Yu Chang fits the description & is proving to be more than adequate as the season has worn on.. his last 30 games or so have been approaching the upper levels of performance for most ML'ers.. ( .287/.323/.596...) Alas.. he's an internal option..

Thoughts?..

At this point in time I would say Chang is the frontrunner to start the season at second base over Miller, Gimenez, and Clement. He hits for power and he hits better with runners on. But I must admit the three other players named are hitting better recently, albeit in smaller sample sizes.

I like Chang as a dual platoon 1B option with BradGOAT and as the IF Util. But we have a lot of options for that role. Personally, my preferential favorite is Clement. He's the best defender of the Chang/Miller/pure util options. And I just think he's a gamer. Miller deserves another look, but perhaps starting at AAA unless he also has to be rostered.

If you go by short sample sizes and/or what have you done for me lately, you can make a case for anybody.

Remember when Zimmer was getting on base 36% of the time...

Or when Bradleys OPS was .916...

Or when Miller was batting .400 in Columbus?

None of that 'proved' anything.

Over his last sixteen games, Gimenez' OPS is .976. While in AAA, he out produced Jones, Arias, and Gonzalez in terms of wRC+. Of every prospect we have that got at least 100 plate appearances in Columbus, he had a higher OPS than all but Palacios and Miller...although Kwan was higher, just falling short of 100 PAs.

For those focused on HRs, he hit more than Jones or Arias...among prospects that reached AAA, only Gonzalez hit more this year. Gimenez has also stolen more bases by a wide margin than any prospect that played in Columbus...and more than even Zimmer.

If you go by total body of work at the MLB level, Gimenez has out produced Chang by a wide margin in about the same number of PAs....and is a superior defender.

Miller has been much better recently (<20% K since callup, showing more hard contact very recently). He just doesn't pass the eye test as a quality defender though. I think in time he will be a better hitter than Chang, but I think I'd give Chang the edge on defense.

Might be a lucky turn of events with Chang/Miller showing some of their potential late in the year, because either one will be easier to get a return for, and as a unit they are mostly redundant.

I'm still not convinced on Bradley, but he has improved and is still young and we have in-house options (Naylor/Jones) who are maybe not expected to be ready to start the year but can hopefully jump in like Bradley did mid-season if things get too bad.

I really want Kwan to get a shot. Just based of his minor league performance alone, Fangraphs Steamer is giving him 113 wRC+ in MLB. While I would not count on that kind of production, he deserves his chance to show what he's got in Spring Training. And given our struggles in developing quality hitters, someone who already has the hit tool is very appealing.

No.

I think we all agree the lineup needs upgrades, so where do you do it?

Middle IF seems covered. Either Gimenez or Arias at SS, Rosario should play 2B.

3B, DH, and CF are locked in. I think Hedges is C.

That leaves 1B, RF, LF.

I'm not a huge fan of BB honestly, but I think you let he and Naylor battle for 1B and fix the corner OF.
