If they were to pick an offensive linemen, Erving is the guy I would have taken. That being said...ugh, not in love with the investment.

FYI, Erving is a C/G/T. He'll play everywhere and play it really well.

I feel better about the Erving selection in the morning.

He doesn't fill a huge need this year.

But with Mack all but gone after this year. And with Mitchell Schwartz headed for FA, the Browns saw an opportunity to add a quality offensive line prospect that can play numerous positions.

Assuming our line is healthy, we will also really be able to evaluate Manziel. We might lack some weapons(hopefully that changes today) but our offensive line has the talent to be the best in the league.

At first I wanted a skill position player because we really dont have many. Then I remembered the last 3 first rounds that we've had and hell, I'll take 2 guys that can just start all year, and it seems we've accomplished that. Shelton looks like hes going to be a beast, and Erving I'm guessing will start somewhere on the line this year, maybe at RG first and then can take over Mack's spot in case he doesn't actually come back from injury.

I warmed up this pick, let's face it our right side and post Mack was doo doo. We got better last night and didn't make any set back picks. Perriman would of been a good pick obviously because Ozzie was probably ecstatic to have him.

Oh and Erving better shut down Dupree because that was a guy who we could of drafted, now Pittsburgh has him. We ll see very much what he's about.

It's funny, here we are almost 12 hours after 2 first round picks have been made and the 2 threads devoted to the picks have a combined total of 14 replies. We had 14 replies in the Manziel thread every 20 seconds for 3 weeks straight last year. However; these 2 picks are light years better than last year. The bust potential of either of these guys is so low it's funny.

Although, I don't love the pick of any OL in the 1st round, I at least understand the thinking and reasoning. Doesn't mean I agree with it but I understand it for the reasons that @Soar said.

Frankly, I wasn't in love with anyone at 19 when it came to our pick. I really like Jaelen Strong but he has slipped into the 2nd round. Perhaps we can get him at 43 or even a small trade up. I did not like Perriman really at all. Agholor was there but he seems to be a duplication of some of the guys we currently have. Bud Dupree was interesting at 19 but I still have a lot of doubts about how successful he will be at the NFL level. In the end, the Browns made 2 very solid choices of good football players who will play at a high level for many years. Good for them.

I'm still laughing at the Steelers at drafting Bud Dupree. Their scouting has been way off with rush OLB recently. First Jarvis Jones now Bud Dupree.

Let's keep that trend going.

I've been very vocal about not drafting offensive linemen in round 1. This guy looks like a surefire pick, but I just can't wrap my head around the money and draft picks invested in this line.

THREE first round picks, Two second rounders... Yikes. At the end of the day, if you don't have talent lined up around the big guys, it's a lost cause.

That said, this guy looks vicious up front and our running game has no excuse to be anywhere outside the top 10 in the league in most categories.

You guys shouldn't be so vocal about it. We have Mack and Thomas. Two of our few first rounders the org has hit on in the past decade. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Basically a totally different organization drafted Thomas and Mack.

My argument about value doesn't so much involve Erving as a prospect, because he's a damn good prospect.

It's more or less frustration with the fact that it all but seals Mack's departure from the organization after 2015. Not being able to retain the guys they HAVE hit on through the draft, in part because of organizational ineptitude, it a frustrating thing to watch.

In summary, I just WISH this pick didn't have to be made. I hoped it wouldn't have to be made.

But I guess I've got to come to terms with the fact it had to be made.

Point is drafting the OL high has worked well. I'm happy with it. Not a wildcard that finds a way to not work out over and over again like Richardson, Weeden, Manziel, etc.

BACKGROUND:
A three-star defensive tackle recruit out of high school, Cameron “Cam” Erving was unheralded as a recruit receiving only three offers: Florida State, Clemson and Georgia Southern, committing to the Seminoles shortly after they offered. After redshirting in 2010 because of a back injury, he served as a back-up defensive tackle in 2011 as a redshirt freshman, recording 20 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack. Erving made the transition to the offensive line prior to his sophomore season and won the left tackle job, starting all 14 games in 2012 (switched from #98 to #75). He again started all 14 games at left tackle in 2013 as a junior and was awarded the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is given to the ACC’s top offensive lineman (voted by the coaches), also earning All-American and First Team All-ACC honors. Erving started the first nine games at left tackle in 2014 as a senior before kicking inside to center where he started the final five games, earning First Team All-ACC honors and the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the second straight year. He was invited to the 2015 Senior Bowl, but chose not to participate.

STRENGTHS:
Wide, flexible base with long arms and heavy hands…sets up well off the snap with low pad level and natural knee bend…flexible coil to attack bodies, lock out and drive rushers away from run lanes – takes full advantage of his limb extension…good-enough base strength to hold his ground vs. bull rushers, digging his cleats to anchor…good vision and awareness to sink-and-recover…loose hips and joints with the lower body athleticism to operate in space…clear understanding of body positioning and angles, pulling well to get into space…looks to bury his man with good fight through the whistle – shows consistent competitiveness on each snap…versatile experience at defensive tackle, left tackle and center…quick-learner and smart as he was responsible for all the line calls at Florida State…durable and reliable with 42 consecutive starts the last three seasons…mature, team-first attitude and considered a hard-working self-starter by his coaches.

WEAKNESSES:
Will overset off the snap and needs to stay patient, laboring in his kickslide and leaving his body open for rushers in pass pro…choppy footwork with below average body control, struggling to recover when beat in space, spending too much time on the ground…overextends and needs to be more patient with his punches…bad habit of stopping his feet at contact and lowering his eyes at the point of attack, allowing rushers to re-gather and beat him with secondary moves…inconsistent hand use and will get grabby…lacks the functional strength to consistently halt rushers when off-balance…needs to keep his emotions in check, getting caught for after-whistle actions…medicals need checked out after missing the 2010 season due to a back injury.

SUMMARY:
An All-American left tackle, Erving was the back-up center during FSU practices and moved inside full-time for the final five games of the 2014 season, solidifying the Seminoles offensive line and reinventing himself as a NFL prospect – appeared much more comfortable on tape at center. Although he started the last 42 games on the offensive line since moving over from defense, he is still raw in a lot of areas and not yet the sum of his parts, but the tools, intangibles and versatility are there for him to be a long-time NFL starter. Erving doesn’t have a preference at left tackle or center, but was a much better prospect inside, showing improved confidence and effectiveness in small quarters – top-40 prospect and the draft’s top center prospect.

Yeah, not sure the point is to avoid drafting those positions....but drafting better.

Keep in mind the Browns also have Michael Bowie, player who missed last season due to injury but started 8 games for the Seahawks in 2013. Bowie was a rookie in 2013 and played guard and tackle.
