I was class of 2010, so kind of between you and @selby56

Worked football, men's/women's hoops, and hockey as gameday staff (usher). Then did my practicum in ticket sales, basically cold calling on businesses and former group/season ticket holders to buy group tickets or renew season tickets.
 
Can you imagine if a team from the 1980s suddenly warped here and played a modern college tournament? I know players these days tend to have more athleticism in the top six teams or so, but it's all one and dones. Even some random Lute Olsen 1980s team that got bounced early would run the table. These top teams have zero continuity.

The reason I pull for mid-majors or the wack-ass newbies like Northwestern is they actually played with each other more than one year, and treat the college experience like their glory years rather than an inconvenience.

As far as MAC teams go, Ohio U has actually been the most impressive of the conference over the last 10-15 years. Upset Georgetown (who hasn't) as a 14 seed back in 2009 or 2010. And then beat Michigan as a 13 seed back in 2012, I think. They were actually super close to making the Elite 8 that year but lost to UNC in overtime. I went to BGSU and they're the only team to never win the MAC tournament and haven't been to the NCAA since 1968. Pretty pathetic.

Anyway, I'm pulling for SMU to do some damage. I usually root for most mid majors because an NCAA Tourney without at least one good mid major Cinderella team is fucking pointless.

Man, that OU run will always be the biggest what if for me (alum 2012). Walter Offutt had two free throws to ice it in regulation, but missed the front end. Then DJ had a half court shot that was just a bit wide that would have won it. Team just ran out of gas in OT.

Had they won, they would have had to beat KU, and they probably would have lost. But still, just having that chance would have been crazy. Probably the closest they'll get to the Final Four in my lifetime.
 
As for who wins it all, I've got Nova going back-to-back. May be a little biased since I'm currently at a school in the Big East, but seeing them up close three times... that team is unreal. Jenkins, Hart and Brunson are three of the toughest dudes in the country, and the rest of the guys do a great job filling their roles. I know Duke is the trendy pick, but I don't see them getting past Nova.

Nova, Arizona, Louisville, UNC is probably what I would go with.

I don't think there's any doubt college basketball is at an all-time low in terms of game-play.

I can't even imagine what an early 90's UNLV, Duke, or Arkansas squad would do to these teams. Bobby Hurley and Christian Laettner would beat today's Dukies by 40+ in a boat race and Duke is the Vegas favorite this year.

It's still fun to watch because it's great competition, but you are correct....the game has devolved a shitload.

All you have to do is look at the depth of the Tourney fields back then. Take 1990 (my personal pick for all-time best Tournament.) LSU had Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) and Stanley Roberts- three future NBA 1st-round picks, two in the top five- and were a 5th seed. Alabama had Robert Horry, David Benoit and Keith Askins and were a 7th seed. There was just a ton of talent- upperclass, too- throughout the field.

Greatest CBB game I've ever watched live was the Duke-UNLV Final Four game in 1991 (I was working the night of Duke-Kentucky '92.) Either of those teams, given current training, nutrition, etc, would annihilate a mid-2010's bracket.
 
Almost an upset on the first day, damn.

Umm.. Fla. State might be the longest CBB team I've ever seen. Their whole squad is full of point forwards. They have like five 6'8 ball handlers and a legit 7'2 guy. Their whole lineup is at least 6'6. I mean Ojuo is 7'1 325lbs. Man they are going to be a tough out.

Fuck it, they might win the whole thing.
