2018 Cleveland Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
When in doubt, Hue will always Hue...

Exactly. Hue could just be thinking he is out smarting the opponent like his "exotic formations". Where he shows some weird formation just to do a normal vanilla play that we have seen 100 times. I believe this o-line thing is the exact same thing, they will lineup with Bitonio and Harrison for the first snap then will be Corbett and Bitonio for the rest of the game. It might even be a combination of an "exotic formation" with Harrison to throw off the Steelers so much that they won't be able to think straight for the whole game.

Some info on new Browns...

NT Carl Davis
26 years old, 6'5", 320 lbs. Fourth year player out of Iowa. Drafted 90th overall (3rd round) in 2015 by the Ravens. Played in 13 games with 3 starts as a rookie at nose tackle, logging 237 snaps on defense and another 65 on special teams. Badly injured his ankle in the Ravens preseason finale in 2016 and missed the entire year on injured reserve. Came back in 2017 to play in 15 games with 9 starts at nose tackle, logging 301 snaps defensively with another 51 on special teams.

Davis does not appear to be that much different from former Brown Danny Shelton. A solid run stopper who provides very little in the way of a pass rush despite what appears to be good athleticism relative to his size.

According to Field Yates, Davis was the most sought after player on waivers with four teams (Cle, Wash, Mia, Cin) submitting claims.

I think it's very possible that Davis ends up "starting" for the Browns at nose tackle, but given his lack of a pass rushing presence, he's not likely to play more than 30-40% of the team's defensive snaps.

DL Ifeadi Odenigbo
24 years old, 6'3" listed 258 lbs a year ago, now listed 275 lbs. Second year player of Northwestern. Drafted 220th overall (7th round) in 2017 by the Vikings. Spent the entire 2017 season on Minnesota's practice squad.

Interestingly enough, as you can see from the tweets and weights above, the Vikings asked Odenigbo to bulk up in an effort to play more 3 technique and the results appeared to be excellent in the preseason as he logged a pair of sacks and 8 other QB hits.

He'll likely be in the mix as a backup at 3T and DE.

Since the end of last season, the Browns have pretty dramatically overhauled their defensive line.

LB Tanner Vallejo
23 years old, 6'1" 230 lbs. Second year player out of Boise State. Drafted 195th overall (6th round) by Buffalo in 2017. Made the Bills roster out of camp and was a special teams stalwart, logging 256 special teams snaps which was 3rd most on the team. He also played 13 snaps defensively.

Not sure if he has the chops to be anything more than the No. 6 LB defensively, but he should see plenty of snaps on special teams.

DB Tavierre Thomas
22 years old. 6'0" 205 lbs. Undrafted rookie out of Ferris State. This kid walked on at D2 Ferris State and eventually became a back-to-back two-time Division II All-American. Finished his career with 14 interceptions and 35 PBUs. Great straight line speed (4.38 forty).

Not much to know about this kid, he played some in the preseason with the Cardinals reserves. My guess is that the Browns wanted to sign him as an UDFA and the Cardinals either contacted him first or offered him slightly more money to come to their camp.

C Aaron Neary

25 years old. 6’3” 301 lbs. Third year player out of Eastern Washington. Undrafted in 2016, signed with the Broncos, but was released in final cuts. Eagles picked him up and he spent the entire 2016 season on their practice squad. Went to camp with Philly, but was let go in final cuts in 2017. The Rams claimed him and he spent the majority of the season on their practice squad before being promoted to the active roster to start in week 17 when the Rams sat most of their regulars.

Rams drafted a center in the 4th round in 2018 which pretty much put the writing on the wall for Neary's future there. He actually worked at LG some during the preseason, but it was clear he wasn't going to make it given what the Rams drafted.

No.

Absolutely not.

I wasn’t even a Wentz fan throughout the draft process in 2016. I was very much Goff or bust when it came to the quarterbacks, but the fact is that I was wrong and the Browns were wrong. Passing up on a franchise QB is NEVER the right decision if you don’t have one even if the Browns had found quality starters with every single pick they acquired in the deal, which they obviously did not.

Sashi Brown and Hue Jackson collectively botched the Wentz evaluation and it was a supremely disastrous decision by both men.

In hindsight you are right, but at the time, if they weren't high on him (Which I wanted Wentz so I am not disagreeing with you in a lot of ways) then trading down made a ton of sense and they got a ton in the trade. I mean it took three drafts to finish the trade. The problem wasn't the trade but the execution of it since we got a player we didn't keep long term. That's been one of the main issues since the Cleveland Browns came back into being in 99 has been the drafting. Outside of Joe Thomas and Alex Mack we have failed on every single 1st round draft. Garrett is still too new to decide on and Tim Couch may have had a good career if he actually had a line, but thats been the whole issue, we haven't done anything the right way.

I will give credit to Sashi with the fact he stuck to his gameplan and made sure we stuck with it. Dorsey in some ways has benefited from the plan since he was given a roster with a ton of cap space and picks. He could do whatever he wanted with it (hence why 31 new players) and honestly some pieces in place, like our DLine, were legitimately good.

Wentz in a way got overhyped since he went to a legit team and became the starter, which does help a young QB usually. Would have still been a franchise QB here? Probably, but would it have taken longer? Yeah it would have. He would have struggled his rookie season if he started especially since we didn't have a team around him at all.

Carl nassib claimed off waivers by the bucs. Orchard will see the bills tomorrow and jets on Wednesday. Weird to see guys getting cut even interested by other teams compared to previous years. This is a good sign.

We actually had a solid DLine last season, if we had a secondary we could have had a way better defense than we did at the end of the day. Yes we made a bunch of changes to the defense, but we still cut some decent players hence why they are getting picked up by other teams.

Carl Nassib to the Bucs, no team in the NFL last year gave up more yards in the pass and overall yards than Tampa Bay, a truly bad defense.

I’m saying it’s a good thing. Before we’d just let guys go that nobody wanted. Now we are letting guys go that have talent because we’re replacing them with guys who have talent/higher potential.

A slew of Browns cuts got claimed in waivers.

Nassib, Brantley, Jordan, Thomas, Reiter all got claimed I believe.

Fuckin dude on Facebook talking shit about the Browns. Says the Steelers gonna win 50-14. I gave him 3-1 odds. $500 wins him $1500. He won't take it. Talkin shit, no balls...….
Steeler fans are worthless.

I bet with one that the Browns will win 6 games for $100. He kept talking and said Browns won't even sniff the division title because the Stoolers are gonna win 13 games this season.. Yeah right.

How did Chad Thomas fair this preseason? I was trying to catch some clips of him to see how he did, but couldn't find much. I'm really hoping he has a good season.

However, Avery is likely the guy to watch.. Kid looks so good. If he gets healthy and stays healthy.. I'm gonna love what he's gonna bring.

More brave talk. Bro I feel you. At least the record
will show that you slapped your brass balls on the table.

Browns now only 4 point dogs for opening game. We have a decent chance at pulling this one off.

In your opinion, were these cuts objective or a product of a new regime purging the prior one?

Good question.

I think it’s both.

Considering they replaced Nassib and Brantley with two guys who have never taken an NFL snap and were released by other teams, it’s impossible to say the Browns actually upgraded in either scenario because there’s no way to know if the new guys brought in can actually play or not.

On the other hand, neither Brantley nor Nassib showed enough on the field to guarantee themselves a roster spot.

Yes, Dorsey replaced 31 of 53 players from a year ago, most of them Sashi acquisitions, but you notice he didn’t replace Garrett, Ogbah, Peppers, Kindred, Schobert, DeValve, Ogunjobi, Higgins, Njoku or Gonzalez. Why? Because all of them showed more capability on the field than the guys Dorsey axed.

I think replacing someone else’s question marks with your own question marks is pretty standard for a new GM.
