2018 NFL Draft - Day 1

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I assume @Ohio doesn't know how to feel, because on the one hand he hates Mayfield but on the other he's an insufferable OSU homer. Tough call. Maybe a hate boner?
Huh? Oh yeah, people are still triggered that I & others were right about the Peppers pick. Sad!

I think he’s saying you hate Mayfield but love Ward buddy. So you don’t know how to feel about our draft so far. :chuckle:

This read as a Donald Trump tweet.
That was the joke :chuckle:

Right, but he's not saying I'm an "insufferable OSU homer" because I "love" Ward. I do hate Mayfield and I do like Ward, but I don't have mixed feelings. I think our 1st round overall was bad because I think we pissed away the #1 pick and don't believe the QB position was solved. That's a failure no matter what happened at 4.

No he’s saying you’re an insufferable OSU homer because you’re just that.

One of the biggest OSU fans on the board. :chuckle:

It’s not a slight. You’re just a massive fan.

I do sort of feel bad for Allen. He went to a terrible situation for him.

OTOH, he did give everyone a heil Hitler so fuck em.

Oh like you didn't have a Nazi phase at 17.

Saying you're right about a pick a whole year into a career when they were played out of position due to necessity (and a dumb line up at that) is pretty...flawed.

The fact that he was a walk-on two different schools and rose quickly to be the starting QB is encouraging. That doesn't happen just because of your personality. There has to be some serious underlying talent there that your new teammates and coaches notice. I wanted Darnold, but the truth is that all of our views here are shaped largely by what we read, written by pundits who aren't good enough to get NFL jobs. Even if you watch a lot of games, you're not going to have the insight the GM's get from the interviews, background, white board work, etc..

So, I'm going to watch this kid play before making up my mind as to whether or not he was the right pick.

I’m not a big Baker guy but that’s the one thing that gives me hope with him. To go from walk on to starter to Heisman to #1 pick takes determination. I think he has a lot of work to do but unlike Johnny, I think he’ll actually put the work in. Not a fan of his physical skillset or how much work I think he’ll have but at least it’s possible with him.

Ward I love as a player but I think Dorsey absolutely left value on the table taking him at 4. With Buffalo clearly looking to trade up and Tampa clearly willing to trade back, I think it would’ve been pretty easy to do something similar to what the Packers did by trading down to a desperate team then trading back up and still getting their guy.

For all the crap that Sashi got for passing on QB, he at least understood extracting extra value from picks.

That's really tough to predict. Buffalo wasn't willing to give up its other first round pick, so we'd have had to trade up using only their No. 12 and second round picks. And it's entirely possible that we do that and he's gone anyway.

Ultimately, I think assigning true value to a player based on pre-draft slotting by draftniks and pundits is fundamentally flawed. Just because pundits say that a guy "should" go at 8 or so doesn't make that an accurate assessment of value, nor is it a guarantee that NFL teams don't value the guy higher than that. So you risk outsmartting yourself by passing on a player you really like in the hope that he'll be there for a later pick.

Sashi didn't really do that. He just traded down because he got really strong offers, without targetting a specific player with that trade-down. In fact, his biggest tradedowns were for future picks, where of course you're not targetting a specific player in the current year's draft at all.

How did @Midwestcav both like, and find this post funny? I thought you could only give one rating? Oh God, are there two of them???

Yet you're labeling the kid a racist and hoping he's a failure because of a few tweets he made when he was 16. I mean that's pretty extreme, no?

I'll just say that when other players screw up with drugs and other misconduct, some people are far more willing to say "I did a lot of stupid things when I was young too," so we shouldn't ruin the kid's life over something stupid he did in college. But here, where you have a kid who did something like this (unknowable whether he was serious or just making a bad-taste joke), it's time to break out the crosses.

Total double standard.

Maybe we got the franchise QB and a lock down CB1 last night but I think our GM was playing checkers last night while the good teams were playing chest. We left a lot of value on the table last night. Besides knowing who the good players are you have to know how the draft is going to go and manage it. I think Sashi really understood the last 2 but needed to improve finding the right/good talent. Maybe the new GM can't do the other 2 but finds good players. God I hope.

With out worrying about trading down lets look what the draft could of been compared to what is:

1. Mayfield 1. Barkley. 1. Mayfield
4. Ward 4. Mayfield. 4. Chubb
33. Landry. 33. Jackson 33. Guice
35. Guice. 35. Landry 35. Jackson

I think I would rather have the 2nd one but we won't know for 3 years.

If you look at trading down I think our expectations for what we were going to get back for trading was to high. But there was opportunity if we made a adjustment. We could of dropped to 12 and then back up to 7 to get Ward or even maybe 10. I think we could of also played with the 1 with the Giants and Jets. At the minimum there was a 2nd and 3rd round pick out there we could of gotten and still drafted the same players.

When I mused about Denzel Ward being worth the fourth pick, I really never thought they would actually do it.

He can be a true lockdown guy, and he is just other worldly from a speed perspective.

I just want to mention this again. Not only is he an ultra explosive athlete, but to find guys that fast and athletic who also have no hamstring problems is extraordinarily rare.

Like, there is no reason he couldn't be Patrick Peterson or Charles Woodson good. Both of those guys were bigger than Ward but I think he could have the same impact as those guys.
