2019-20 Cavaliers Regular Season Thread

But Beilein is the greatest developer of young talent ever. His innovative system was going to make us look like a real team.

Beilein should get two more years to improve. If,he hasn't improve after the third year it's time to move on from him....

Improvement means winning atleast 30 games next year and being in the playoff mix in the third year.

Who did you want ? And how do you know guy would even want the job. Everybody has 20/20 vision in the rear view mirror

The team has limited talent. Look how great steve kerr is this year.

There is nothing wrong with Belein at all. We started with a flawed roster and then things got worse. We drafted 3 first rounders, 1 gets to play with any regularity. Add in the usual injuries, bad contracts, and bad attitudes. This is what you get.

Can we stop this line of thinking every time someone doesn't agree with a hiring/signing/draftee etc? It doesn't matter who I wanted. My thoughts and opinions aren't being considered by the organization. Doesn't change the fact that I called this being a clusterfuck THE MINUTE the hiring was announced.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people expected. There's no such thing as a development process with a consistent arc of progress. Belein is learning, too. KPJ, Zizic, Windler w/injuries, Garland's sick, we knew Love would be frustrated, and that's all been blown out of proportion. I think the relatively decent start to the season might have fooled some folks.

I guess I just honestly wonder what people thought they were going to get this year? I went with 22-25 wins, which is what most people voted, and I'm guessing the Cavs will just barely cross that threshold or be just below it. So what's with the anger?

Some of the posters on RCF were not around pre Lebron and Irving. The reality of an nba rebuild without a friendly lottery system to bad teams is hitting them in the face. I don’t think some of the posters realized how hard this was going to be.

And what is this need to toot your own horn?
Your actually taking credit for saying tge coaching hire was bad. ? Of course with one of the worst rosters in the nba and three guys that were 20 years old no coach was going to look that good You prediction is/was bs

"We’ve had a number of times now in the past two weeks where we’ve got up double-digits, had leads and it seems like in minutes we let them slip away. We have to find ways as players to continue to stop the bleeding, get buckets and slow the game down or speed the game up and dictate the pace on that end.” -Kevin Love

Like I said, the Cavs frequently play the opponent even or in some cases outscore them for most of the game, but have one really bad stretch like against Washington where they were outscored by 26 points in 9 minutes late in the first and early in the second quarter. The other 39 minutes they outscored the Wizards by 14, but that one bad stretch cost them the game and there was nobody who could stop it. They don't have a star player who can make a couple of buckets to "stop the bleeding". They used to have Clarkson for that role, but not anymore.

They've also had problems with illness and injury. Exum and Garland had the flu and lost five pounds. Porter is out with the knee injury. Nance missed some games. Zizic, who was playing well and leads the team in on/off point differential, got slugged in the head and is out indefinitely. Mason Plumlee needs to be suspended for throwing that wild punch.

But mainly they're playing bad defense - both team and individual.

“We’re not defending at all, not at a good level,” [Tristan] Thompson said. “You’ve got to do that consistently in this league for a long period of time and we’re not doing that right now....Teams know they can be physical with us and if they move the ball, they can get in our paint."

And once they get in the paint they find there are no effective rim defenders other than Henson, who sees few minutes.

I don't see how much better they can get defensively this year,,Garland and Love are sieves defensively. Sexton is trying to guard players taller and stronger than him so he gets abused just about every night. That leaves Cedi and Thompson in the starting lineup. Cedi loses his man way too much..he's ok defensively when he's focused I guess. Thompson can hold his own defensively unless he's going against a Drummond.
I went 18-22 wins in the poll but I hoped they could get near 30. That's not happening.

7. Cleveland's horrid transition defense

The Cavs are a perfect storm of horrific transition defense: young guards who attack the rim, fall down when they miss, and don't yet know how to communicate scrambling back; corner shooters who slump their shoulders when those same guards don't pass them the ball; guys so thirsty for offensive rebounds, they run in from the 3-point arc to chase them in vain; and veteran big men who, let's say, aren't super-motivated to bust ass for a crappy team. Some players fall into two or three of those categories.

Cleveland gives up the most transition chances in the league, and the highest points per possession on those transition chances. That double is so terrible -- requiring so much sloth and incompetence -- I almost admire it. It takes real commitment to be this bad at getting back on defense.
When they do retreat on time -- when the odds are almost even -- they turn ho-hum semi-transition situations into full-on emergencies with bad gambles and dumb decisions.

Don’t know how to load the clip he used but it highlights everything Zach mentions. Garland takes an awful turnaround shot he air balls. Cedi and TT run from the three point line to the basket for an impossible rebound (McKinnie crashes too). Two passes later Zubac is dunking on Sexton with McKinnie making an effort at least to help and Garland, TT, Cedi are the last three players on both teams to get pass the half court line.

Who are we even tanking for? I mean is there 2 or 3 significant difference makers in this draft?
If there is I haven't heard of them. I thought Wiseman but it seems like some have soured on him. Maybe Edwards? He would slide in nicely to the two guard.
I'm sure we will get a pretty good player but I'm with Jake I'd like to see some wins.
Huge difference between having a "pretty good player" who might be a difference maker, and no 1st round player at all, if we fall outside the bottom 10.

We'd be better off with this one last season tanking, and conveying 2nd round picks next year, although I suppose it's possible to get Draymond/Siakam players in or near the 2nd round if you get extremely lucky.

Every once in a while you kinda hear certain words in interviews that may show why some of these happen. I’ve heard Garland and Sexton talk about “helping get in for rebounds to help the bigs” and even though they are short, they are not back to even slow anyone down. We put people in the corner 3 who watch too much and don’t start back immediately. Just an observation.
