You might see contenders moving a bad contract and 1st to get a productive player like TT or Clarkson to actually shore up a weakness while getting off bad money. It would not be for free agency this year, but just to clean up the cap and pay less tax in the future.
George Hill and the Bucks are a good example of this. Getting Hill gave the Bucks options going forward and at the end of the day they brought him back on a 9 million per year contract. The ability to use bird rights to resign guys and keep the MLE and bi-annual exception open for new additions can be worth giving up a late 1st round pick for.
TT might get a pay cut but for the right team he might still get 9 or 10 million like Hill got. If Clarkson can be an effective 6th man for contender, a team would be happy to keep paying him 13 milkion a year.
