2019 Browns Rant Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The problem is that Ward was not playing in zone most of the day. NFL Scrap R has not compiled the information from this week's games, yet, but when they do I would be surprised if Ward was in zone on more than twenty percent of the plays, and almost never when he was playing deep. Those plays were straight man. The team was running cover three most of the day, but had the two outside corners pressing, and the nickel out in zone with the two safeties. So, if zone was to blame for Ward's issues, it was that he was not aware where his teammates were on the field.

ETA: Ward was playing in straight man here. He just got beat when the receiver cut in. He's got to be more aware than that.

Aren't the safeties also late with their help there? The deep safety looks to get turned around in that clip. I'm not trying to justify Wards bad play, just trying to understand the scheme better that they are running now.

Yeah, the safeties are in zone. Randall was terrible today and Burnett is clearly not a replacement for Peppers.

I agree with you, Ward played poorly, all I am saying is that I do not think it is because of Willks' scheme. In reality, Ward is basically doing the same thing Gregg asked him to last year. Today he was defending the far receiver on Mariotta's strong side and, in bunch sets, was always on Brown. He then played man coverage and stayed with the target down the field.

I am going to try and rewatch bits of the game over the next week and figure out what Ward's problem was today. It honestly felt like Ward just was not prepared for Brown's shiftiness combined with poor safety play. I also think Willks weirdly kept going back to Gregg-ball on third downs and high leverage situations. The whole idea behind Willks's defense is that you generate pressure via a strong front four and good coverage. So it was very weird that he kept reverting to a six-man pass rush. I think that effected Ward because, where Ward expected help on his inside, that helper was frequently blitzing or covering another receiver.

At least the Steelers are getting their asses kicked by the Pats. Their fans were ready to make fun of us pretty badly.

The Steelers lost a lot of talent.

I was completely underwhelmed by our play-calling and the type of passing plays we expected Mayfield to execute on.

I get Mayfield has a cannon for an arm, and showed last year he is capable of dicing up defenses. But putting him in empty sets, or 1 back sets, and simply asking him to make progressions low to high or high to low, and treating him like he’s Tom Brady is just stupid.

He didn’t do it at OU, and his best moments last year came on mostly scripted and pre-designed throws.

I HATED how we operated the offense today. Not creative at all, limited misdirection which is what Baker excels at, and largely a Pro-style gameplan that didn’t utilize Mayfields skill set.

Frustrated with the game plan above all else. If this is how we wanna operate offensively, Mayfield is pretty much fucked IMO.

This is why I'm not as...alarmed? by thing

You have time. You're not going to be in the Super Bowl conversation this year.

New England is having Brady complete insanely good passes while under pressure from TJ Watt. Launching bombs to fucking Josh Gordon.

He's gonna have Antonio Brown join him very soon. that's insane.

The browns job is not so much to "rebuild" right now, but to get to the next step of being you know..."relevant". Division winners or in the wildcard hunt.

Do not get me wrong. Win now. go for it. But understand that we're not in a "ALL IS DOOMED" moment.

so the titans have been 9-7 the past two seasons, feature guys like delanie walker, derrick henry, cameron wake and malcolm butler....

have had Vrabel coaching them for at least a year now...

...and i'm supposed to rip on a team that has basically been together for a very short time?

why does this make any sense?

I'm not trying to say they're the Patriots. Hell I think Mariota is very pedestrian. But isn't it fair to say that the browns still have some work to do in culture building, while the titans are already there?

Felt like we were running a Monken-style offense. Lots of shotgun, empty backfield, and trying to have Baker gun the ball to someone on a seam route. Our offensive line isn't built for that kind of offense.

Where were double tight-ends? Counter runs? Hard boots? Reverse plays? All the smaller, quick-hitting plays that Freddie was using last year that opened up the deep passes? Chubb should've been handed the ball a lot more early on - Titans were obviously playing the pass the entire game.

No adjustment at halftime either.

We lost this game because of penalties and poor play-calling - both signs of awful coaching/discipline.

Fucking nailed it.

Spot on stuff here, honestly. Couldn't agree more.

The Browns have some holes. They have some issues with the coaching and they have issues with the fact this is the very first time the team has had Odell and Landry out there all preseason with Mayfield and the first team offense. It isn't going to just click right away. That's silly to believe anyways.

I believe in this staff, the team. I believe in the top talent they have, and I trust Dorsey to make the proper moves to help get them to the next level.

The team has seriously line issues. Like bad. I didn't think they'd be this bad, but they are. Adding somebody like Trent Williams makes a lot of sense, but dealing a 1st-round draft choice, and then extending the man is a risky play for Dorsey right now.

I agree the wildcard hunt makes the most sense. I don't know if this team is ready just yet to win the toughest division in football. But, I do think they'll contend for it.

Get in the film room. Spend extra time together at the facility to get this thing corrected.

There's nothing wrong with owning up to the fact that this team isn't -there- yet.

I admire the attitude by Garrett, Baker, Kitchens, and OBJ. You -need- that attitude. You need to believe in yourself. I want them believing they can do anything. I want them from the players on my team.

The posters on this site have been actually well...reasonable after this loss. I mean we're not dancing down the aisles, but it's nice to see people just reflect on it rather than hit the panic button.

The reaction by the media was just...disgraceful. I don't know what the hell broke these people's brains but man I hate the "whiney" mindset by these people.

Oh wow! Now we have "INDIANS FAN ONLY" chiming in. Awesome.

I mean it's not like this area has an insane amount of football culture related to it. OH NO. We're just dummies.

...

I think a lot of people (including myself) were expecting like a 26-14 sort of game.

And honest to god? The reputation around this franchise doesn't exactly lend itself to patience. I don't blame them. It's been hell.

People were probably expecting the 1999 St. Louis Rams on offense and some sort of "Fearsome Foursome" or "Purple People Eaters" like effort on defense.

Well...it takes a while to build something. You have the parts. The execution is the tricky part of it.

You can either wallow around in pity or get to work.

Early yet. But you're right about pity or work.

Baker Mayfield will probably be staying late every night until this loss is avenged.

As for the Indians fan complaining about the attention the Browns get:

That 4-12 prediction of mine is in play. Hope it’s only a hiccup and come out blazing next week though.
