2019 Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I just hope Monken is the kind of guy who says "Of course Freddie is calling the plays. He's one of the best in the league at that. He proved it last year. I'm just honored to take the reins of the offense on a daily basis and help get it where it needs to be."

Football's a business where not enough people are willing to put egos aside and just work towards being better. I wonder if we truly have a special relationship there with Monken/Kitchens... or if Monken is going to stew in this and feel slighted.

The messaging from the offensive coaches has been consistent since late January:

The top assistants all have a role in designing plays and providing input all week, but Freddie calls the plays. The collaborative approach is what attracted the quality of assistants the Browns have right now, but Freddie has consistently been playcaller since he was announced as HC.

I agree.

I just hope Monken is the rare guy who's okay being an OC who doesn't call plays.

If we start to lose some games or struggle, I really hope it isn't eating at the back of his mind saying he would've done x, y, or z differently.

Well, considering he had plenty of other options, but chose this one because he believed in Baker and Freddie....

And considering they told him up front Freddie would still be calling plays....

I anticipate it will all be just fine.

I think Monken knew exactly what he was doing taking a non-playcalling role with the offense on the steepest rise in the NFL. The Browns should improve by a few wins and a few spots in analytics with their young offense maturing. He rides his role in planning the passing attack to a better job offer next season if everything goes right.

Let's say he chooses a team like the Panthers or Broncos for a play calling gig instead. They have question marks all over their offense. Then NFL people start wondering: Is the problem the players or Monken's offense? Maybe a little of both? That is what Shanahan is dealing with after scheming a Niners offense lacking weapons for two years.

If we lose a few games and Monken pulls a Todd Haley, maybe he can get some post NFL coaching advice from the actual Todd Haley. I just don't think he is that much of a bonehead.

I actually really feel bad for the guy. I get he is the Titan's best lineman and means a backup has to try and stop Myles week 1, but these type of things really suck and rob the fans. I get the policy has to be zero tolerance, but still wish there was something they could do for the guy.
