He played in the Ohio Valley Conference, same as Morant but a low/medium competition level of teams. You can look at that different ways but I think it really depends on what skill you are looking at. For example, I'd be much more concerned about his getting to the hoop ability v lesser competition than I would a skill like distance shooting. Steph Curry for example played at Davidson and he has had no problem continuing his great distance shooting in the NBA. Also; Windler was guarded well in college because every opposing team knew what a threat he was from deep and often would hit 3s with a hand in his face. The last thing I would worry about is his shooting from distance but he needs, like any shooter, decent amount of playing time and shot opportunities.
Altman said after they drafted him that he does a lot of things well and they were focusing on players that can dribble, drive, pass, and shoot and Windler fits that. I'm more intrigued by his passing in the NBA than what he showed in college with real threats around him and hopefully more spacing.
I doubt he will average 10 rebounds per game but I do think he will be a good rebounder in the NBA. Kevin Love is one of the best rebounders I've watched - isn't going to outmuscle people but just has a knack for knowing how to get in position and where the ball is coming from and I see a bit of that in Windler. He is also very active when it comes to rebounding and has the mentality where he wants to get the ball.
My only negative on him is I think he could use more weight on him and will have issues with bigger players because of this. I think the whole defense thing is up in the air, not just on him but for all of the Cavs players until we see what Bickerstaff and the other coaches do with it. But I'm also one that is more a believer in team defense than individual freak one of one type that makes a true difference in the game. I think players like that are rare (Gobert). I also think it is a waste of time to judge young NBA players on defense. They have so much to learn in the pro game early on in their careers and you also have guys that are one and done types where their bodies aren't even mature yet.
