2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Porter actually took 80% of the rookie scale for year 1 instead of the usual 120%. Seems odd to me though.

Maybe it was just a thank you for the Cavs trading to take him in the first round. Alot more security in being a 1st draft pick than a 2nd round pick. I'm sure they Cavs got his people all the right contacts for him to make that up in local endorsement deals.

Seems unnecessary considering it saves just $300K and might rub a player the wrong way in the future for extensions.

Sure, we paid $5 million for his draft rights but can’t pay him an extra $300K in year one?

Especially when we’re paying JR Smith $500K just to possibly cut him anyway.

We save closer to 640k not 300k. We are paying him 1.29 M versus 1.93 M. But I agree with your point this could rub the player the wrong way. But you have to think they talked about it before drafting him and his representation was fine with it. Still worrisome to risk rubbing the player the wrong way. But like @inliner311 said we likely set him up with some endorsements to make up the money. Could also just be a show of good faith by both sides with KPJ helping the team out and the rest of the contract is at the usual 120% rate. Still getting 400k more then he would have gotten this year if he had been a 2nd round pick.

I'm sure that they came to him and his agent with something that made up for it or exceeded the value of the money he left in the table. Remember LeBron's crew got jobs and access to alot of Gilbert's cars when he was here the first time. I wouldn't be surprise if Gilbert uses foreclosed homes and repo cars from Quicken Loans/Rocket Mortgage where he or his family gets a real good deal on new homes and/or cars. I think they would be able to do endorsement deals thru the casino to make up money too.

Maybe he got a player option out of it or something like that, No way we asked him to do it to save less than a million on the tax. He must of asked for something in return, not sure what, but it will come out why that was done.

Can't have a PO on 1st round pick contracts. They are always 2 years with team options for years 3 and 4.

Thanks for quantifying. That’s what I get for not actually doing the math and just pulling a number out of the air.

But even so, I hope this doesn’t impact how he perceives the Cavaliers upon entry considering the difference in 80% and the 120% often means so much more to the player than it would to the team.

With a developmental player like Porter Jr., you sure would hope it’s not a player option.

Cheap team control while his game grows is the appeal.

Thanks, I am just saying he gave up money for some reason, we don't have the whole story for sure

I think it probably had something to do with the Cavs moving up to 30 and spending 5 million cash to get him. Probably involved a wink/wink deal for him to agree to this.
