2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Porter is average 3pt shot away from being a good starter. I enjoy his growth.
Agreed. Porter looks great. He’s a top 10 talent that the Cavs got with the 30th pick. Absolute steal of a pick.

I think there are more things missing to Porters game before I would consider him a downright good starter. He’s still extremely raw and he frequently makes some real headscratchers.

A lot of that is down to experience and Rookies are almost always net negatives anyway, so I don’t think he’s a lost cause by any stretch, but I think people are setting rhemselves up for disappointment if they think a functional 3-point shot will just magically solve Porters game and turn him into a productive starter.

Yup...I'll be the first to admit that KPJ has greatly exceeded my expectations. I thought this would probably be a G-League year for him. But the Cavs' offensive rating drops from 107.6 with him on the bench to 96.6 with him on the court, by far the worst differential on the team, and that's probably not a coincidence. And it's not just 3-pointers that are giving him trouble; he's shooting 28% overall from outside of the restricted area. If we're trying to be competitive, plugging him into the starting lineup probably won't help our chances, and I don't think it's the right thing for his development either.

Shut your mouth.
I wanna see you say that to his gorgeous face.

Good lesson tonight. Could not get in the paint against them

He needs a go-to midrange shot. Him and Garland. They can get it off at sny time with their handle but they insist on driving all the way to the bucket..

It's our analytics team. Trust me, Porter wants to take the mid ranger

I don't think coach has a problem with the mid-range, he mentioned in a recent presser that he wanted Garland (iirc, may have been Sexton) to take the mid instead of the tougher shot in traffic. I think the mid range is a good shot if you can get a wide open look from the free throw line, that's basically a layup. The long twos just inside of the three point line is the one you should avoid.

The problem is you need to consider shot value, difficulty of shot, and percentage a certain player will make said shot. I.E., during Kyrie’s last few years in Cleveland, he shot a ridiculously high enough percentage on difficult shots to outweigh the negatives.

But if the best NBA shooter makes 70% of open shots at the free throw line then one needs to ask what he makes from the three point line and at the rim.

Most players who are elite in the midrange create substantially more value from three and under the rim. When NBA defenses worried about the midrange, then you still wanted these elite shooters to score from the midrange, to give them more room at other parts of the court.

The problem now is that there are only a few players who bend defenses enough in the midrange to warrant those shots (Kyrie, prime Chris Paul, Durant, etc). There are a few others who would be borderline worthless without the midrange (DeRozan is the key player that comes to mind).

The problem a lot of us had with KPJ when the Cavs drafted him is that his limited shot profile required miraculously becoming a better shooter, becoming a facilitator, or developing a set of moves to constantly penetrate. If he couldn’t do two or all of these things then he - more than likely - could not become a positive offensive contributor.

With that said, he has exceeded my expectations, especially as a playmaker and rebounded. But the lack of a three-point shot and repertoire of moves to enable easy penetration are still problems.

He shot 41% from 3 in college. The worry was his ft%. 52% sucks bad. So far he is shooting 76% in the NBA.

He definitely sucks as a 3 pt shooter right now, but I think his shot will come along. He has touch, and you just rarely see a guy with as good of touch as him just not be able to shoot. I think he needs to just take more shots. I'm not sure we know what we have there yet.

would like to know his NBA range 3pt%. For memory Deandre Hunter had a great 3pt% in college but from NBA range it was only average

He looks good. That 3 point shot looks good when he doesn't hesitate. He should just put it up. Once he can make that decision more quickly whether to drive or shoot he is going to be awesome.

Just drove right through some guys tonight like a boss.
