2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Absolutely. Yeah, I just thought Withers did a bad job there with reporting. Not your fault.

Any sprain means some tearing, so his knee is pretty loose right now. How much? How long? I was hopeful last night because they said he had no stabilization when he left the arena.

It was a fluke, but it does make me worry about Porter because he is so side to side spidery. With the way he moves, this may be an issue going forward.

Yes a sprain by definition is a partial tear or over stretching in the ligaments. I don't think his knee would be loose right now though. It's probably extremely swollen. He probably doesn't have anywhere close to full range of motion in his knee.

I don't think there is should be any worry about long term effects of it. It's not like it was a dislocation or hyperextension. I've had a badly sprained ankle and a hyperextended elbow. I can't even remember which ankle it was for sure that how little effected it had long term, while my left elbow has felt different from my right elbow ever since. Maybe someone with experience with sprain knees can chime in.

Obviously depends on severity but I've had sprained knees that hurt like the dickens right away, and are very tender for a few days, but I was right back at it a week later. I mean I probably shouldn't have done that and my knees are garbage, but even the two weeks could be very precautionary.

Not to pick on you specifically but my favorite medical response is when we compare ourselves to NBA level athletes like its the same.

Normally I have something like a 12 inch vert, but I sprained my knee and even 2 weeks later I couldn't clear more than 8 inches. Lucky for me my stepped up my daily training of eating Cheetos on the couch and was right back to playing pick up games at the Y 3 weeks later.

Well, we had one overly positive response.......so I feel like I am obligated to provide a negative one. :chuckle:

Knee sprains can really linger. I don't think they announced the grade or the ligaments effected but I had a pretty severe one (grade 2) from snowboarding, that put me down for 8 weeks. If you are talking pain free, back to normal activity......which for me, at least wasn't sitting on a couch but returning to grueling, days long physical activity.

I think a lot of people think sprains aren't serious......certainly not serious in comparison to a full tear but they can sideline someone for a very extended period of time....especially bad knee sprains. They are far harder to play on at less than 100% than something like an ankle.

Well if you want a real response from me here it is.

Knee sprains at first are mysteries. A full tear is a full tear, but a knee sprain is anything from almost no tear all the way to mostly tear or extremely compromised. They can go from 2 weeks, to 2 months to 4 months to heal from.

But why is this good news? Because no one recovers from an Achilles all the way which some feared it was, and full tears can effect a players knee for their careers even with modern medicine.

So no, he probably wont be back in 2 weeks, but a sprain is such good news compared to what it could have been.

Yes, it is always the best news, especially with how he reacted. I thought for sure it was a season ender.

Most guys who react the way he did, most certainly tore their ACL......well, save Paul Pierce.

His reaction was something I was optimistic about. I love Porter, but he is a baby and dramatic about injuries. Got the wind knocked out of him and I thought his arm was broken for a couple of minutes.

Any way you look at this, it's good news.
KPJ is without question one of the building blocks for the future.
Okay, I'll say it. He may be our most athletic player since LeBron.

But is almost-full tear much better than a completely-full tear? If one part of the ACL is hanging on to the other part by a thread, is that still markedly better than the two parts being completely severed?

Yes, but they did an MRI, its a slight tear and stretched or they would call it something else. It isn't good, but it could be allot worse.

They certainly know the degree of the tear. For example, Jonathan Isaac's injury was immediately called a "severe tear" and he was given a 2 month timeline.

2 weeks (until they examine it again) means it must be more minor.
