2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So, in other words he is rapidly improving, but he isn't a plus defender at 19 on the 2nd worst defending team in the league?

Reading your post makes me more optimistic instead of less about him. Do you honestly think he is one of the worst 10 players in the league? I don't at all. I think Darius has a bigger barrier to entry than Porter, but that's my opinion.
Jesus Christ, man. I've said he is improving and that I really like him multiple times.

Do I think he is one of the ten worst players in the NBA? No, of course not. Do I think he is one of the ten worst players in the NBA averaging over twenty minutes per game? Yes, I do.

And, because I really do not feel like going twenty circles with you over something I did not say, I also think he has more potential than most players under the age of 22 that are playing more than twenty minutes per game. All of these views are consistent, backed up by evidence, and not saying that I think he sucks.

Of course, I think Sexton is a better defender than Trae Young, but the advanced numbers say I am wrong.

Also, what advanced numbers say Sexton is a worse defender than Trae? RPM has Trae Young as the worst defender in NBA history, has a lower D-PIPM and RAPM. The only stat that has Young as better is BPM and BPM Win Shares and that is because those stats overvalue things like steals compared to regression weights.

I have no idea why you are going after me for things I never said. It seems like a waste of time.

I don't know why you think I'm coming after you. I just said I think the "numbers guys" are way off on him. He's not even the worst guy averaging 39 mins, he's just 19. That's all. Using advanced metrics for a rookies defense makes no sense.

Just the other day in the Sexton thread I said Doncic and Trae are great defenders and Sexton is not because someone was saying his defense sucks. Of course none of them are good defenders and everyone knows that no one has made a defensive metric that accurately reflect a individual defense.

Numbers Lie You can turn anything around to make your numbers fit its the oldest shell game in the world If our young players were on other teams they would be the next up-incomers'

If you would like, I’m more than happy to provide you video of Porter’s defense, he’s honestly horrific. He has no idea where to be off-ball and constantly gets lost. All that’s keeping him below the worst in the league is that he’s actually a solid on-ball defender, though that matters much less.

Can you tag me in the post where people were saying Trae is better than Collin? That is absurd. Luka has pretty good moments, though, I think he’s definitely better than Collin. I also think Collin is constantly put in a bad position by Beilein. He’s always paired with Darius to start games, and because of their size, that obviously impacts who Collin defends.

I live for all of this gradeschool bickering about a talented first year player at all star break.

The guy is on our second unit, which struggles to score consistently and is typically swiss cheese on defense most evenings. We have no all-stars, yet expectations are seemingly severely exaggerated.

If he had other willing distributers around him and a true rim protecting center on the second unit his stats may just align with the eye test. +/- Will always be largely impacted by who one shares the floor with in addition to situation in which the minutes are accrued. So he gets tons of run when we're already down 15, this impacts his and others statistical metrics.

Porter looks like our SG of the future.

Is he talented enough to pass on Edwards with the #1 pick? I realize Edwards allegedly weighs 225, but at 6'5", I still see him as a SG prospect.

I'd lean towards Wiseman given the option based on what we have with Sexton and Porter, who both play like 2 guards.

Now, if Wiseman is off the board, sure, I suppose I'd be open to stockpiling yet another 2 guard.
No way should the Cavs pass on Edward's if he's there. The kids is only 18 and already 6'5, 225. I don't think he's done growing. He will end up a SF and Porter is our SG.

Imagine a line-up of

Sexton, Porter, Edwards, Nance and Drummond. That's a bright future right there.

Edwards is a huge question mark in terms of being an efficient player on a winning team. He has some bad Dion waiters traits in terms of shot selection, vision and basketball iq. Not sure he would be a great fit at all. Many see him as a volume scorer that won’t make others around him better.

I think there is flexibility in this roster to take the best available at SG, SF, or PF. I do think they should question taking a PG or Center and evaluate the player against the talent we already have.

I also don't know if the value is still there to draft a center high when they seem to be had for cheap on the trade market and there seems to be a oversupply of them usually in free agency.

I think Porter can be a SG or SF and you can build out a rotation with 5 or 6 wings especially if a couple of those can actually play PF.

Best player on the team.

Although...Nance is pretty close. But this guy is maybe the best prospect the Cavs have drafted since Kyrie. Maybe even LBJ.
