2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Isn’t the obvious move to start KPJ instead of Garland, let KPJ be the starter with the bench lineup, which also lets Garland play with TT. So, when healthy:

Starters: Sexton-KPJ-Cedi(ugh)-Love-Drummond
Bench: Garland-Exum-McKinney-Nance-TT

I think those lineups maximize the young guys’ potential development. I’d also consider giving Nance starter minutes and playing less of TT and Drummond.

The key, for now, is to make sure Garland, Sexton, and KPJ are not all on the court together. Two at a time.

I know I would using KPJ at the 2 ..I'm a bit hesitant to say much about the SF spot now.
No clear cut person to replace Cedi at the moment.

Hopefully we get 2 small forwards this year in WIndler and another guy like Deni or maybe Okoro. Something like that. I think I'd like Cedi to play backup 2. He should be handling the ball more and using a size advantage.

Any chance we can start KP2 in place of Cedi?

The problem is that Garland-Sexton-KPJ-Love is a terrible four-man fit. Two undersized guards, an undersized forward, and a big that is terrible defensively. On top of that, all four of them are most effective with the ball in their hands.

Per NBAWowy, with those four on the court together, the Cavs are scoring 91.5 points per 100 possessions and allowing 129.2.

Since the Clarkson trade, that lineup is scoring 97.5 points per 100 possessions but allowing 133.3.

I think the only way to make that lineup work is by benching Garland for someone like Exum and benching Love for Larry Nance Jr. Even then...

Prefer,

Pg: Sexton
Sg: Porter
Sf: Nance
Pf: Love
C: Drummond

I think Nance is good enough and mobile enough to guard most SFs in the league and will be a defense presence and cutter to the basket.

Garland, Cedi, TT is perfect for the bench. Garland will get to go against bench players, Cedi will ultimately move to the bench anyway and TT is elite off the bench.

Good starting lineup for next year. TT will probably sign elsewhere and be replaced by our draft pick. I'm pretty sure we won't take a guard for the third year in a row. Nance has definitely earned a starting job.

With that unit Sexton will probably come out after 5 minutes and spend a lot of time with the second unit due to his ability to create his own shot. With that starting lineup they have too many scorers. Drummond, Sexton, Love and Porter all like the ball in their hands and need a lot of shots. Garland might be a better fit with Sexton running the second unit.

What about Windler, Ive always thought he would replace Cedi unless he's going to be playing the shooting guard while Cedi play small forward.

Just wanted to comment on this as I heard nance Jr on the Locked On Cavs podcast and he had lots to say about this lineup. He said it was born of necessity because of the injuries to KPJ and Exum. Bickerstafff wanted to try it and it did well in practice and felt fine. He said they were sort of grasping at straws in Washington that game, but it paid off so they continued to go to it the rest of the time.

The interesting thing to me was that I thought it looked like Nance was playing the 3 on defense, but the 4 on offense. He confirmed that in the interview and said it was actually Love playing the 3 in the offense. That looked to be true because Nance simply played the stretch 4 on offense and spotted up a bit, while Love was playing exclusively on the perimeter and was even the ball handler in the pick n roll with both Nance and TT. Pretty interesting.

On the other side, Nance guarded the perimeter better, which we all sort of knew because he is better switching on the perimeter than protecting the basket, and he has guarded guys like Giannis and Kawai at times because Cedi is too weak.
