2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I saw some stuff that various players and coaches tried to contact him over the summer, give him some structure, etc., And he just didn't respond to their efforts. Not much you can do if the guy himself doesn't want help, nor thinks he needs it.

It is difficult to convey this sentiment in a way that is relatable to those who have not been in the military, professional sports or other hardcore leadership positions.

Managing people is hard. Trying to manage someone who is his own worst enemy is probably the second most difficult thing to do ever.

I see comments like "They [the Cavs] just didn't work hard enough!" Well, given the investment in the guy I can assure folks that they did do everything they legally could, and maybe slightly outside the law as well, to bring the guy around.

In Army, and probably more so in the Marines, dealing with someone like KPJ would have escalated to the second to last action possible: "Wall to Wall Counseling." And if that didn't work he'd be chaptered out.

One thing to decide he's not the right fit...another thing to let the situation blow up in such a public way that it obliterated his trade value. Inexcusable.

What trade value did he have? Which of the GMs that avoided him like the plague in the draft and then who later all knew of his two separate legal issues this off season we’re going to trade anything of value for him? Even if he had went to Canton and played the way he is for HOU G-League, that was not going to give him some huge trade value.

Im not going to knock the G League because I know we are using it as a way to measure the draft eligible guys on the Ignite, but at the same time Porter is two years ahead of them experience wise. So are a lot of other guys in the G League who have big games on a regular basis in the G League. Hard to know what it immediately transfers once/if he’s brought to the Rockets.

if anything, I do wish they would have been more patient with him just banished him to Canton for the season while still given him access to personal resources, but I don’t really see a case to be made that the blowout becoming public(which could have happened from his side or other players as well) torpedoing a trade value that at that point did not even exist

Why isnt this KPJ's fault for his actions?

I'm not saying there's no blame on KPJ. I'm saying that, once the Cavs realized that he wasn't going to work here, they should've tried to trade him and recoup at least some of that value. Creating more drama by giving his locker to a new player was purely self destructive from an asset management standpoint.

I don’t think they reached that final cumulative point where they knew for certain it wasn’t going to work here until he blew up at the locker incident and then blew up even more on Koby when he tried to de-escalate things.

But obviously there are a lot of behind the scenes things that none of us know, so I could be totally wrong about that

To me, all the G-League highlights are kinda like "yea no shit". We already knew KPJ had a ton of talent from what he did in his rookie year. The question is whether or not he can get his act together off the court. Which the Cavs believe the answer is "no," otherwise he'd still be on our roster.

If it was a situation where they were trying to mend the relationship with him, then it still doesn't make sense to do something that's likely to piss him off. It doesn't matter if the Cavs are in the right morally or not...at the end of the day, they spent a draft pick and lost him for nothing, and that's on them.

Pretty much the entire NBA passed on him TWICE. He fell to #30 and then had no bidders offering anything of value despite his obvious talent.

That's objective evidence he's not worth much. We drafted Eyenga at #30 as well - should we be whining about that?

It's like a chick that dudes avoid because she's an 11 crazy and 9.5 hot. (OK, slightly flawed analogy, there are lots of dudes that will go there but you get the point). Lots of pro athletes crash out of their sport because they are mentally messed up. There are always people that believe mental issues can be "fixed" with the right coach / teammates / psychologist but some people can't or won't change.

I think they concluded he wont get his off court shit together in Cleveland, they are trying to have him hit rock bottom and wake up. The fact he is still in the g-league and not playing for a team in almost last place is proof he still has a long way to go to get his shit together or he would be playing in Houston.
