That is a nightmare inducing amount of money. Our only hope is that some team didnt watch much of DG this season and only remembers last year.

It only takes one sucker.
I think we have to keep him another year no matter what, if only to rejuvenate some value.
Unless phoenix wants him

Barring something crazy happening, I think those rumored Keldon Johnson, Grahaham/Jones, couple picks from the Spurs is the best the Cavs wind up getting.

I was hoping for more, but I can’t see a team paying the Cavs more than that with the money he’s still owed.

It’s kind of a gamble at this point IMO. His salary will continue to climb, and there’s probably a better chance he remains the same or gets worse vs. rejuvenating his value while saying.

Of course the majority of this discussion hinges on what Mitchell does. Cavs aren’t going to trade Garland this summer unless Mitchell commits.

There are probably organizations out there convinced that Mitchell’s presence has impeded Garland’s development.

I don’t think unloading him would be especially difficult.

Amazing how bad he's been. He's been figured out, you just have to clamp on him a bit and he'll make mistakes.

I think his flaws were pretty apparent right from the start. I think one big problem is that this organization and JBB just didn't seem worried about correcting his flaw or any players flaws really. They just leaned in heavily on the players strengths to the point that the player didn't think they needed to work on their flaws at all.

We now have 4 examples of highly drafted players who just didn't develop much under JBB after their initial jump from the NBA game slowing down for them. Sexton, Garland, Okoro, and Mobley. I think everyone thought each of them should have had higher ceilings and better progress than they have shown so far. Garland seems to regress from his all star year. Okoro and Mobley have added 3 points shots but are basically the same players they were their rookie year.

I don't expect Garland, Okoro, or Mobley to immediately make a huge jump under a new HC. I think their development have been stunted and all I'm hoping is their development can be restarted under a new coaching staff. It might take multiple season for any one of them to make another jump if there is any correctable development left in any of them.
I actually think the organization has a very good development plan. Even with sexton, his shot profile changed from long two's to 3 and rims.

Okoro had a season to forget last year, but you can see him pushing through growing pains.

Mobley has steadily increased his range and physicality.

Garland should've had the easiest path. Do more of what he's good at - shoot the 3, set up the play, and be DG the PG. But somehow, he went against all those things. Are you confident to disagree the coaching staff isn't asking him to do those exact same things?

The most crucial aspect of a pg’s game should be his poise. That separates the great PGs (see CP, Nash, Kidd, Stockton) from the pack.

It is such an innate ability I am afraid Darius lacks. He is now in his 5th year with post season experience under his belt and he still wilts under pressure.

This is why even if DM leaves, I would still trade him. He cannot really be relied upon as our floor general when the chips are down.

I am not sure that DM can be relied on either

I don't know if I trust Altmann with this upcoming summer of moves..
This...all of this falls on Altman..weak coaching staff. The failure to bring in a veteran back up point guard so Darius can study under him, doubling down on a poor coach, poor roster construction. He should be the 1st domino to fall

Sometimes I just feel like Garlands issues are a result of him being small physically. He gets beat up. Eye, jaw, back etc.

Guys like Dame, Steph, and Kyrie have some similar elements to their game in some ways but they are 6’3. Garland is 6’ or 6’1.

A lot of PGs are bigger than that now. And ones in more recent memory who aren’t taller but are still really damn effective are built dudes. Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Maxey and Jameer Nelson

Darius Garland, respectfully, looks small. He’s not a wide body or big upper body guy.

So if you lack the height and lack the muscle mass, you’re more likely to be injured or banged up. Not many guys are shorter and skinnier and are truly great. Iverson might be one of if not the greatest pure athlete to play any sport. Stockton was one of the best passers ever. As was Nash. There isn’t a huge list.

Anyways I think the injuries, fear of being injured, being worn down are also impacting Garland mentally. Making him more passive.

Idk just my thoughts.

I still don't trust him from the Kyrie trade... It's really too important of a summer for any mistakes. He doesn't have a great record. Garland contract making him look worse each day.

That's not fair. I've been as hard on Garland as anyone recently, but he 100% looked like and acted like the kind of guy that you lock into the contract he was given. He was easily on the path of being a perennial top 5 PG in the league.

Then he got paid.

And now we have whatever he is this season. Are those two things related? No clue. However, the timing is certainly something to evaluate.
