It's not about whether he can shoot over guys or not, its whether he can actually hit them at a respectable clip. Garland's release is plenty quick and his dribble package and ability to create space for a 3pt shot is definitely sufficient at the very least. The point is just whether he can actually make them in game. If he becomes respectable and hopefully he will, that will open up his driving and dishing game. But he can certainly shoot over guys.
I think the reason he didn't attempt as many threes as most on here would like is because he found it hard to create space to get them off, which made him hesitant to shoot, hence the lower percentage and fewer attempts

I thought he got lots of open looks and passed them up. I'd yell "shoot" all the time and he would hesitate and then shoot or pass it up. He has to be one of the major spacers on the team for him to stick.

I heard he would hoist like Trae Young from anywhere and I was bearing myself for poor shot selection. If anything he was too tentative. We have too many capable 3 point shooters who are reluctant to letting it fly.

You are right he doesn't have a particularly high release, but garland was shook for half the year at least on how fast the game was and how big guys were. He got swatted a lot initially, but settled in a little as the year went on.

I dunno, he has some moves, step backs and stuff that are pretty encouraging. It just isn't polished enough yet.

Hahaha, me too. Physical tools were always a concern for him though, IMO. Tough to carve out a role when you're not especially tall, long, fast, strong, or vertically explosive. Have to be a ridiculously exceptional passer/tough shot maker.

He was twitchy. You won't convince me otherwise. He has gained weight since college...he isn't in top shape yet. HE used to dunk, in his rookie season he could barely touch the rim.
Next year is Garland's redemption year.

Fedor has a lot of stuff on Garland today, mostly about how he's transformed his body since the end of last season.

Garland, who received just 14 votes for second team All-Rookie, never felt like himself last season. Coming off knee surgery and unable to work on his game leading into his rookie year, Garland entered training camp out of shape. Then he suffered another setback. He played catch-up all season, unable to fully adjust to NBA speed, athleticism and strength…

“Skill set and talent is all there [ a source said]. But physically, he looks different. He knew that would have to be a priority and he’s taken that really seriously. He’s more shifty…he’s moving a whole lot differently.”

He's been dunking with two hands in workouts and the Cavs are excited to see that because it shows his legs are back.

We also were told that according to gym workouts, he was a phenomenal long distance shooter who doesn't miss.

So I'll wait to see what he is able to do in an actual game rather than an empty gym.

He doesn't miss - when nobody is guarding him and there's no pressure and he can shoot 25 in a row. But in NBA games last year he only shot 35.5% on 3's. I expect that will improve a few points this year with experience (knowing when he has enough room to get the shot off) and stronger legs.

I'll repeat this because I keep thinking about it. Some Cavs blogger looked at Garlands shot and noted that he generated all his lift from his legs. It's not specifically a bad thing, but there are some potential issues. He brought up that that was how Daniel Gibson generated his power too. All good unless you have the guy off balance. It's much more important to be balanced and raise straight up. Boobie was great when he could get his shot off clean, but if you crowded him he wasn't really. He was specifically awesome hitting wide open shots off LBJ with a fast release. Boobie wasn't JR hitting falling out of bounds shots in other words. JR has a lot of upper body off balance stuff, which translates well to the playoffs.

The other issue with generating the power there is that if you sustain a lower body injury, it can severely affect your shot and linger. If you are injured all season like Gibson with his turf toe, your shot will abandon you. It will be interesting watching Windler who is more high release upper body shooter vs Garland this year and see who has success in which situations. Garland has been reported to not have had total confidence in his knee last year.
