I really hope he can come back and pick up where he left off. He was looking like the type of PG I've wanted here in Cleveland for a long time.

If it turns out he's not, our outlook takes a big-time hit.

If he meets his potential he has made this team infinitely better.

A Sexland Backcourt CAN work with great team defense, and they've shown that they can do that.

In my view, the Cavs have 3/5 positions locked down moving forward: Garland at PG, Sexton at SG and Allen at C.

They need one more star to really make this team dangerous in a couple years. Either via trade or the lottery for that Swingman or new PF. I mean I would not pass up the next great Center, but it is no longer considered an area of need.

Off course, Okoro is also a factor. He has the potential to be a star. A great swingman defender who can also score at will. A la Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Prime Caron Butler and maybe 90% Leonard. As it is, his floor is a higher end JR Smith.

It is much easier to add one star than two, and I think Garland will be elite within two years.

I have a similar view of the team right now.

I’m a Garland fan, and believed he had this type of play in him, but I’m also smart to enough to know that every NBA player is talented enough to string some good games together.

I believe he will do it on a consistent basis, I just want to see it before I lock him in.

Yep, it is going to be interesting to see how these guys all play.

Right now I am watching Garland and Okoro every game. They are the two that the Cavs need to reach a high level, otherwise the rebuild is doomed.

Can't whiff on two straight #5 picks.

He's got to take care of the ball. 11 turnovers in his last two games is too many. As the quarterback of the offense one of his top, if not the top, priorities must be to limit turnovers. Otherwise he showed a lot of promise.

The thing that has me feeling pretty confident, by both #5's is they both seem to have a good feel BBIQ. The same reason some felt Sexton wasn't a player, is the reason it is easy to see both Okoro and Garland turning out.

What their ceilings are remains to be seen. Maybe Okoro never becomes a scorer of any consequnece and maybe Galrand never really realizes his shooting. It's possible. That IQ though, that is what makes me think both have fairly high ceilings. Good starters at worst barring injuries.

He just can't stay healthy.

He's still got a lot of work to do on his body. He came into the league off of a knee surgery and never really got into shape...then you had the COVID debacle. Garland doesn't have any long term health concerns in my eyes. And keep in mind, they're going out of their way to be as cautious as possible with even minor injuries.

His game against Detroit wowed me

21 and 12 with only 2 turnovers
9/14 from the floor 3/3 from deep

I hope he has a lot more games like that this year
Garland seems to me, right now, to be a guy that may not have a 40 point game or even more than 3-4 20/10 games per year. But, if he can be a 14/6 guy this season and do the little things like play defense (per Synergy, opponents are shooting half a percentage point worse with Garland as the nearest defender), then I think Garland will end up having a great year.

Ultimately, the hope is that Garland can maintain his defensive performance while also developing the playmaking skills necessary to be a stud point guard. If he can be an average defender with great playmaking and a decent three-point shot (36%+) then he will have been a great selection.

That's all true, but in the Cavs situation after losing Porter, they'll need more than that from Garland. They'll need him to be a 18/8 guy that plays adequate defense. The good news is, there's a good chance he gets there or even better.

We need him to turn into that or Okoro to be an absolute stud. Margin for error got slimmed down.

He said "this season" which is a reasonable expectation. Moving forward, we'd all hope he does better than that.
