Garland definitely lacks strength right now, but I think his defense looks pretty solid. Whether Sexton has improved a lot this year remains to be seen, but I think Garland is much further along than Sexton was last year

Also in general the defense looks a lot better.

It's early, but I think the two most important traits in the NBA today is reliably hitting the open three and length/quickness to challenge the opponent's open three. Critics are not wrong in questioning how far a team can go with 8'1 and 8'25 standing reaches in the same back court. My concern with Sexton was always that he is a nice building block, but the team is committing to a defense that doesn't switch and relies on him always defending the point guard. Now they have two guys who have the same defensive liability.

With those skills, dribble penetration and playmaking has always been important. Sexton had always shown a great ceiling in scoring off penetration and his playmaking is progressing. Garland has the tools, however I wonder how well he will do when he gets bodies up by somebody stronger and just as quick. Offensively, they mesh... it's the defense against the three I wonder about.

However, this is the early stage of the rebuild. We don't know what the team will look like in four years. Maybe one guy established himself as the true point and the other established himself as a scoring 6th man, and they can overlap for stretches despite the defensive liability. It's just too early to know.

Clarkson sure. But what do you think yu can get for Knight? I don't believe he will have value whether he plays well or not.

I think Knight if he is playing well and is healthy might actually be a easier sell to teams than Clarkson. He is a guy you sell as an upgrade to a teams guard depth. I think he could come in and be a solid to high level 3rd guard that a team wouldn't hesitate or worry if he had to be pushed into the starting unit for a long stretch. If a team has a decent second unit, Knight be someone who comes in and upgrades it without major disruption.

I think Clarkson has a completely different market. He is someone that is for a team looking for a 6th man and has a horrible bench or a group that are defensive specialist. I don't think a team would insert him into the starting line.

Really who gets shipped off first really depends on injuries on other teams or just poor play that was unexpected. One of Clarkson or Knight might actually be playing better than the other but the other might get calls first just based on need. I doubt the same teams will be calling trying to trade for either one of them.

I do think they are the biggest road blocks to Garland and the other young guys development. Let them shine and put up those highlights so teams will come calling so they can be cleared away quicker. Both need to be gone long before the trade deadline approaches.

I actually don’t mind Knight, Clarkson on the other hand...

Garland was much slimmer and cut in College. His body looks different. Wonder how long it;s going to take him to get into good shape.

If we get anything for knight it will be fleecing a GM. Clarkson on the other hand, I think we will get something for. Targets will be teams with injuries in the back court, or veterans that aren't meeting expectations..

...so the return is going to be Brandon Knight?

Knight has zero value.

Clarkson you can swap expiring and get a second for maybe. No ghost of Jiri Welsch 1st going to happen.

Love should get you two firsts, but maybe a 1 and two 2s. He does have a big contract after all.

TT value is something like two seconds. ]

We have a lot of shit outside of KLove.

Knight and Clarkson have the same potential for value this season IMO

They are both medium-sized expiring contracts. That's where their value lies, in our ability to take back multiple years of money for them.

I definitely think the bulk of their value lies in their contracts. A GM might pay alittle extra to get Clarkson because of the questionable talent in the 2020 free agent class and how much of a question mark in terms of fit Clarkson can be. They might see taking Clarkson on like a half season test drive on him before paying him next summer. If he doesn't work out they still have the money off their books to go after someone else who is a better fit.

I think Knight on the other hand will be a guy that a GM see as an expiring that can help this season. He is going to fit into basically any team that needs a guard. He will be a rental that a GM will hope they can upgrade in free agency. He might end up like George Hill though where he fits in and they want to bring him back.

Good point. I thought you meant as players. The expirings do have some value

Clarkson has his warts no doubt, but he is worth more than people think

Really? Playoff contenders or up and coming teams are the ones willing to deal.
After watching him just get obliterated by Corey Joseph a few years back I don't see how any playoff caliber team woudl want him.
Then if your an up and coming team do you really want him busting out that iso game among all the youth?

He is a 6th man of the year candidate. He is 3rd in bench scoring and has gotten better since he got here.

Yeah he had a bad playoff run, but man that team was a mess. He also admits that he never played deep in the playoffs, and he hit a wall during them.

I don't think he is a great player or anything, but a team like that has a good starting unit, and a garbage bench with some dead money would gladly rent him for the year. If we didn't have so many young guards, I think I would want to try to keep him. He and Delly play well together.

I could see a lot of EC teams wanting the Clarkson points off their bench. The only team that doesn't need a real scoring guard off their bench is Milwaukee in the East. A team like Orlando, Boston or even Philly could use more bench depth.

I think they get a late 1st or multiple 2nds.
