I love Garland’s one legged step back fade-away once he gets into the lane. Seems like a good weapon against bigger guys and his touch seems more natural than with the floater.
Think he just shoots better with backward momentum than forward momentum, he rarely misses the step back 3's but will brick the open corners regularly... yet he hit that fade away corner 3 late in a game early in the season

I've been wondering if the coaching staff was trying to break him of that? KPJ they had to make him take jumpshots that weren't step backs. Every shot was a step back for him.

I wonder if Garland had so much trouble shooting initially because he is more comfortable stepping back? He looks so comfy in that step back 3. It looks more natural than his plain jumpshot

Rough shooting night, but excellent assisting the ball.

Garland has a natural feel for the game. He's actually quite advanced for having played almost no college ball. He should take a huge leap by year 2 in the NBA.

Has anyone compared him to his dad's rookie season lol. Kinda eerie. Very similar, but dear old dad had a better free throw rate and more assists

Looks like Daddy dearest actually played defense tho.

I know nothing about him, but yeah looks tougher by drawing more fouls and commiting more fouls. Unfortunately when Darius fouls, he still gives up the and 1

His dad was 4 years older as a rookie. Darius just needs to get to get to the offseason healthy and work in the weight room to put on some muscle so bigger guards can't just go through him. He is already showing he has what it takes to play the point in the NBA while being amongst the least prepared NBA players since they stopped high schoolers from entering the draft. (not a knock on him, but he played less than 5 college games and didn't have a real offseason due to his injury)

Yeah and he has already improved, but his disastrous start to the season is going to drag down this years numbers no matter what. He's playing like the 2nd best rookie right now, but you would not be able to tell by the stats.

In January he's averaging 16.3 ppg versus 11.8 in December (January 8 games; December 14 games).

Assists are up from 2.7 to 6.1 per game, again comparing December and January numbers. That's the biggest difference.

Steals are up from 0.5 to 1.1. Still not many, but trending up.

His shooting percentages are within 1% for 3-point shots and overall, but he's taking 13.5 shots per game in January against 10.9 last month.

He still gets easily shouldered aside when opponents drive to the rim. He needs to learn to strip the ball as they gather for the layup. Or reach in and poke the ball away on the dribble. Or worst case foul the guy on the floor before he can gather for the shot. He's only had one game out of 41 this year where he's had more than three fouls.
