Orlando is a good team to let him find his rhythm early with their poor guard play, shouldnt be too hard for him defensively either

I never saw this tape. Looks like sloppy execution cost Darius a lot of dimes. Not all are great, but he is a creative passer.

I dont think he has the same deficiencies as Sexton when it comes to passing

Sexton looked better at the end of the year. From what numbers we have to go on, Garland is the mildly worse passer.

Some have said he was the best passer in the Country in High School, but he has to prove it in the NBA. I'm optimistic, but I also think Sexton is going to be improved.

Sexton is a combo guard, not an insult, the man can score. Garland has amazing high school tape on passing and is a true pg who happens to also be a phenomenal shooter.

Well he was a 2 guard most of his life before college. I know some people say he was this sick passer in High School. 2.7 assists per game is less than Collin. Collin averaged more than that in the NBA and in College.

I'm not saying he can't do it, but he needs to actually prove it.

Here you go. This shows Collin can pass. He had 10 assists in his last game.

I think Sexton was pretty limited last year to mostly drive&kick passing. He wasn't great at navigating the Pick and Roll as a playmaker and didn't keep his head up in transition.

Garland's tape indicates the potential to be special in the pick&roll and deadly in transition when you combine his pull up game, endless range and cross court. His ability to shift gears on a dime while keeping his head up and his handle tight make him a deadly pick and roll player too. Frankly, Garland has MVP-level potential given that range and handle. His tape basically has everything you want from a guard in this league.

One issue in the pick and roll with Sexton is that his main go to pass in college was over the top. We have seen that story before. It just doesn't work well in the NBA. Windler kept getting those picked off in Summer League and he is 6 inches taller. That is something that needs adjusting.

I do think Darius is better at keeping his head up, but most of his passes come in transition just like Sexton.

Garland has some potential as a passer but his biggest issue, as a lead guard, is turnover generation. Passing isn't a super useful skill if it comes with an equal amount of turnovers.....and Garland has some concerning markers in his combined sample set of AAU, EYBL and his handful of college games.

His usefulness as a creator largely (to me), depends on how much he can improve his decision making. I think he's skilled and creative enough as a passer, he just tends to not make great decisions, especially in traffic.....and that is where he racks up turnovers. Hopefully Beilein can be helpful in that regard.

His playmaking is the cap on his potential in my opinion. It's very obvious he will be able to get anywhere with his handle and can shoot off the catch and off the bounce from deep range. If he can do that and also keep his turnovers low with healthy assist generation then he will be a high impact offensive player. His value is significantly lowered if hes unable to be an adequate playmaker, but he will always have a roster spot with his deep range.

There is no way I can say with any definitive confidence in such a limited amount of film that this Garland character is more than another undersized 2 guard with some lead guard handles and a high basketball IQ.

I am completely sold contrary to popular belief that they really thought he was so much better than anyone else available as the sole justification for picking him. They also believe still that the offers coming in will be substantial if they decide a Sexton Garland backcourt will never work.
The fact though is the roster now has 2 score first undersized combo guards and there is a very strong chance they really screwed themselves taking who they thought was the BPA for trade bait only to be left holding the bag.
All that aside if Garland can really shoot like that underrated kid out of Davidson then at worst they picked an elite bucket getter and that is not a bad pick, just not likely he actually ever will reach that level so if somebody like Hayes becomes a DPOY candidate and Garland is nothing more than Jeff Teague, it was the wrong pick
