Prob the same one that Sexton was the worst last year.

I think it is obvious Darius wasn't in shape day 1 and struggled with physical play all year. He wasn't ready unlike Porter jr who just went and played.

Still, he got a lot better over the course of the season. Turnovers came down, defense and physicality improved.

I've heard small comments from redrafts and things where people have confidence in him that aren't Cavs fans.

People have praised his floater which did not go in for months, but had started to drop with good efficiency.

He stopped picking up his dribble.

Looks like he has been working on his body which is the most important thing right now. He has good instincts and feel for the game, but he looks like a kid out there getting bullied.
That's why, I don't understand, why Beilein started him at the beginning of the season.....He could have waited, the last ten games before the All-Star game starting Garland and nobody would have a problem with it. It was obvious that Garland was not in game at the start of the season but Beilein was too busy trying to rush Garland for the first game.

There was many times that Garland looked like he was extremely exhausted throughout the games.

I definitely agree that the trends are more important for rookies then the overall average -- and you can probably throw out the first half season.

Just wanted to point out that the VORP might have been what one of the previous posters was talking about.

In any case, Sexton's VORP is not that bad this year -- it is tied for 13th out last year's first round draft choices, so a big improvement for Garland is definitely possible,

Yeah I think it probably was Vorp. Sorry, if I made it sound like I was disagreeing with you. I was pissed by how people are underrating our young guys. I've been listening to more general NBA podcasts and they don't seem to understand our players.

Like Barrett is still being touted as a passer, while Sexton is pure tunnel vision while having better raw assists, per minute assist, and assist %. I don't get it. Yeah he is smaller, but they are both probably secondary and not primary passers.

Yeah he was super gassed in a lot of 2nd halves. His body needs to be his #1 priority this offseason because he is already very skilled for his age.

I think him being tired had a lot to do with why his shot wasn't falling like it was supposed to.

He definitely had a shock to with how big and strong everyone was. It makes you wonder if he would have been so passive if he had come off the bench initially.

He needs to stop being passive with his shots..I've never seen a player turn down wide open shots. I hope that changes next season...

100%. A guy with such a reputation as a shooter should not be that reluctant. His game needs to be built on the threat of his shot, or he just won't succeed. His handle is good, but not that good, and his first step and finishing is not great. He has to get that 3 pt shot to be a major threat for him to reach his potential.

It is hard for rooks. Collin and Porter Jr both started their rookie years avoiding the 3. You just can't do that in today's game. They will just shrink the floor.

has he ever really had a "reputation" as an elite ceiling shot maker though? I dont think that was the selling point for most scouts but rather the NBA lineage, years of playing lead guard with a higher than average basketball IQ for his age and the ability to be a creator or so they expected. He istead not only struggled physically due to never having that level of defense in his face consistantly in his life up until then he failed to overcome it much at all which is what all top 5 guards usualy prove capable of doing otherwise they are just like all the other guards who are not ready and get drafted late 1st. Heck KPJ made quick adjustments to the league and he was drafted late first.

Everyone is in love with his shot. It was why he got drafted where he did. He has to make good on it.

Comparison was Dame taking long pull up 3s

Not what I read or saw at all during the pre draft process. It was all about his ability to pass and run a team and the shooting was just a cherry on top for those who bought it would transfer even though he lacks elite separation ability ti get clean looks. The kid was a 5 game mystery man against meh competition with a lot of concerns about coming off injury and excuses made in his defense because those types of injuries and repair are a dime a dozen etc and the Cavs took the bait on his one on nobody workout where he proved he can hit shots all over the gym with nobody defending him. lol who cares I mean the game of basketball isnt about shooting ability when noone is in your face its about creating clean looks.

2.6 assists in college. That's less than Collin. If anything his ok assist game was surprising to me. Was a 2 guard in highschool.

You don't have to tell me about shooting against defenders vs not. I brought this up when he was drafted because I saw a shooting video that he got all his power from his legs. Boobie shit like that and he rarely hot those JR pressure shots where you get bumped, but hot wide open ones at a high rate. That's what I saw from said this year

He does not have a man's body yet, so I will allow him some time to adjust to the physicality.

his dime rate was twice that for all years combined in HS and Clevelands interest started with the IQ and passing not seeing Sexton as being that guy but
ignoring it might not transfer with Garland not only coming off injury but never being an elite speed or explosive guard . His decent shooting % against Winthrop and Liberty in a couple college games or a lower dime rate in such a small window could not have seriously been much of a factor. I am guessing if anything seeing him knock down shot after shot after undefended shot was enough for them to beleive he at least has a chance to become a great NBA guard if he can get healthy and generate looks against NBA level defenses. I am not sold he can do it consistently to justify a starting gig esp given his meh defense so far. He also averaged 5 rebounds and 1.7 steals in HS which clearly aint gonna transfer didnt in college and wont in the NBA.
The problem is no matter how gifted and skilled he is,or even a proven record of winning in HS he lacks the level of athleticism to be worthy of a top 10 pick let alone 5 and will have to become a ludicrous shooter like Curry to make it all worth it, and he never has been that. He has been good to great but not elite.
Imo it strings even more after such a poor season given the level of PG options in this draft had they not seen a improvement from Sexton in that dept. to move him back on ball full time if they pass on a elite floor general in this one because they think they still got one in Garland, when in truth they have a potentially fringe elite rotation scorer /creator and not a future all star level leader that people thought he might be.

Garland is noticeably bigger. Looks like he might have a little more burst. A little more quickness and strength can go a long way for him.

I hope he goes harder to the basket like that in the NBA. Seemed to be leaning more into contact and using it to get his balance instead of avoiding it. Going to be a lot harder in real games.

He is playing against absolute scrubs though.
Can't really say if he is bigger or more explosive as it is totally a different angle and competition.
