2019 FA and Offseason Mega Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I can confidently say that New York, Charlotte, & Washington are worse than the Cavs. We should be competing with Chicago & Atlanta. I can see Detroit possibly imploding as well.

Out west only the Grizz & possibly the Thunder look worse than the Cavs.
The Thunder are significantly better than the Cavs.

The Grizzlies, it really depends on Jaren Jackson's 2nd year leap and how good Morant is right out of the gates.

I think we finish with about the 4th worst record. Something in that 24-26 win range.

It's important to distinguish between raw talent and expectations for 2019-20 wins. We can all agree that in terms of raw talent, the Cavs are not the worst team in the league. If we could warp time to have Sexton, Garland, Love, and Nance all in their primes next year, we'd be looking at a pretty decent team in spite of the mediocre talent around them. But with the exception of Nance we're not getting any of them in their prime (or even close), and with the exception of Sexton they're all liable to miss significant time due to injury.

A team like Charlotte, in contrast, lacks elite talent but has a lot of mildly-above-replacement-level veterans playing big minutes. Their young guys Miles Bridges and PJ Washington are lower-ceiling prospects than Sexton and Garland, but they're more likely to be decent roleplayers right away. There's a chance that the Cavs could be better than them this season, but a lot of things would have to go right for us.

I disagree I think it’s pretty clear we will be a 20-25 win team.

It may be "clear" to you, but given the other responses in this thread, it seems like there are a fair number of people who disagree.

We’ll see about the Thunder. They’re going to have likely disgruntled veterans, in CP3 & Gallinari. I definitely don’t see them making the playoffs and they could really go in the tank.

Their roster is kind of like the Cavs’ right now, with a mix of veterans and young players. If they play it like the Cavs, they will rest the veterans and focus on playing the young guys. Boy, I sure wish we had the Thunder’s vast assortment of draft picks!

I only see Charlotte as being notably worse. Knicks are probably around the same mark as us. Wizards are hard to know, I have a feeling they’re slightly better but not by much. Chicago I think could potentially steal an 8th seed. Atlanta have a lot of hype but imo they’ll win 30-32 games... they’re very young and unproven.
Grizzlies and Suns are around our mark, I think OKC are a little bit better.

While there are not any elite elite teams, both conferences have 10-11 teams who have a legit chance to make the playoffs. We are a bottom 10 team with Love healthy. If he misses anytime we are a bottom 5 easy. Hard to see 30 wins, but 32 wins was the 6th worst team in the league last year. I think a healthy Love gets us to low 30s

I think the most likely scenario is 24-26 wins and a better net rating difference than last year. The team - including the coach - is pretty inexperienced, they have veterans that will be traded, and other veterans that will get injured. The team is high variance, but I do not see them being much worse than 24 wins. I just think the team will struggle for long enough stretches that getting to thirty wins will be difficult.

The record really isn't important here. Giving Beilein the necessary time to install his system is the priority. In order to give this young team a foundation to build on for the future.

They are effectively starting the rebuild this season with a new coach and a ton of young guys/vets with injury issues. I hate to say it but they are right there with some of the worst teams in league because of how this roster is constructed and the new coaching hire.

I'm prepared for this to be a shit show of a season. I'm just hoping for the team to show progress as the year goes on. At the start of the season I think we're going to have to feature guys that nobody wants to see play just to get their value up enough to trade them. This will probably cause some young guys to miss out on playing time, which I'm guessing will annoy everyone, but seems unavoidable.

I'll be happy if we can get any kind of decent return for Clarkson, Knight and TT and I'll be ecstatic if Coach Beilein can put together good rotations and prove he can coach at this level.

I don’t think there’s any real reason to showcase Thompson or Knight.

Each player’s primary trade value is purely based on the expiring money. Plus, teams know what they are at this stage.

Someone will take Clarkson as a bench scorer on an expiring deal, but personally, I’d shop him very hard right now even if it negates any return. I don’t want him around our young guards.

It’s going to be an interesting season for sure.

On one hand you have a bunch of veterans on expiring contracts, who know they probably aren’t long for the team & may be thinking about putting up numbers for the sake of their next contracts. These guys include Thompson, Knight, Henson, Clarkson, & Dellavedova.

You also have a veteran, in Kevin Love, who is signed to a long-term, big money contract. While Love would likely prefer to play for a contender, at this stage of his career, his contract may prevent the Cavaliers from finding a deal to their liking, so they may prove to be stuck with him. That is, unless they’re willing to trade him for $0.50-$0.75 on the $1.00?

On the other hand, you have a group of, about a half dozen, young players, who are trying to find their way in the NBA and will be spoon-fed minutes, some of which they may not deserve ahead of these established veterans. How does that go over with these veterans, who are likely thinking more about their next destination than their current one? That could very easily cause discord and infighting.

The guy who is charged with holding it all together is coach Beilein. Like, I said, it should be real interesting...
